Good Morning All.
I decided to stick around :0)

I have a 93 4runner V6 with a knock and blowing white smoke.
The truck seems to still have power.
I am wondering if I can change the HG's and fix the lifter without a rebuild?
Hoping for a cheep fix....

i looked at used motors and they are not much less the a rebuild?

Any ideas would be appriciated...

As all of that is on the top, you don't need a full rebuild to fix the problem, but it'll still be quite a bit of work. The first thing I would do is to check if the head gaskets were taken care of under the recall, if not, you might get that done free.

If you decide to do this yourself there are some really important things to do. One of them is to be sure and put in the service bolt (I think it is a 6 mm) in the end of the cams BEFORE you take off the chain. The other is to keep each lifter in the same place as it was. In other words don't mix them up! I would invest in a really good service manual as well. Good luck.

HG recall

Thanks,

Is the recall still valid?
I thought it had to be done within 5 years and X amount of miles.

I read about it, can't hurt to call and ask.

thank again...
