liftgate auto close

Is there any way to fix a liftgate auto close motor that has strted to go bad ?

My hatch has recently begun not closing all the way , or sometimes it seems to close and then let it open a little.


I would rather not spend $200 + on a new motor right now if there is some way I can lube or otherwise fix it.

From my searches so far I have only seen people replacing the motor but no one fixing it, hoping there is some way to lube or adjust it since the motor seems to be working most times and pulls the hatch in before releasing it but just isnt functioning the way it was before.

Sorry but you're going to need to replace the motor, I found mine brand new off ebay for $120 shipped. Mine was doing the same thing, it would close but pop itself open after a while. Hasn't happened since after I replaced the motor.

So I wondered about this.... what are the symptoms that would indicate this is a problem? rattles or water leaks or air leaks at speed? Mine seems to release just slightly after motor is closing but I dont see any negative effects indicating I need to do anything. :noidea:

I would close mine, hear the motor pull it in tight and then after a while of driving on the hwy or off roading on the trails (would pop itself faster off roading) would see my door open light on the dash and would hear wind noises in the back.

I thought I had to get a new motor for mine but I took it apart and there seemed to be some of the plastic coating of the latch that was partly jammed in the latch. I pulled it all out with pliers and greased and cleaned it really good and so far I haven't had any problems since. It has been about 4 months or so. Not sure if it will come back but for now I am happy.

While we are talking about it. Can I just say that the auto lift gate on these is one of the dumbest things ever? The motor doesn't do anything. You still have to physically close it. I really wish they just kept the manual latch.

I haven't pulled one of these apart yet but from other threads I believe that if the auto-close isn't functioning (you don't hear the motor run) then that's a motor problem. If it pulls shut then pops open a little going down the road that means some of the internal gears are worn to the point of slipping. In either case it looks like you're replacing the assembly.

While a used part is an option the installation is kind of a huge pain. Better to buy a good part and do it once. With any luck it should long outlast the rest of the truck.

The installation is actually quite easy. It shouldn't take long. But agree to get a new part over used.
