okay so im trying to figure out what it takes to lift a 2nd gen 4runner. i understand you can do a body lift or just taller springs and struts or a bracket lift or even the ball joint spacers. what i dont get is what do the ball joint spacers actually do? and can they be combined with a 2 inch suspension lift to get 4 inches or so? thanks

look's like it has mostly the same part's . i would check reveiw's . i did not find many for the procomp.

im thinkin toytec 2 inch with ball joint spacers then 2 or 3 inch body lift would be the most capable and cheapest way to get 35's

My suggestion is get a real suspension. Don't bother with that junk or you should be driving a Hummer.

Throw in a good suspension to net 3-3.5" of lift, then do a 1.5" BL and call it a day. Get some spindles if you want to go big in front.

Why do you want 35's on a 2wd?

The Pro Comp and the Rough Country are similar bracket lifts, one doesn't look any better than the other.

uhhhhh no im thinking of buyin a 2nd gen 4wd. my 4th gen is a 2wd and it is for sale.

It was late so I misread. Why are you downgrading? That will be a terrible change for a daily driver... I guarantee you will regret losing the comforts of a 4th gen in comparison.

You should save up for a locker for your 2WD, throw a real lift on it, and call it a day.

Do you have any idea how little power you will have with 35's on a 2nd gen?

None if he gears it properly.

None if he gears it properly.

None? I think you mean no power loss, not "no power" in general.

I am comparing it to a 4th gen, not compared to a stock 2nd gen... They are slugs in comparison. This is also assuming he actually does re-gear it properly.

okay i was only looking into a 2nd gen cause price.... im really debating between a 3rd gen and an 80 series land cruiser. i know going from a 4th to 3rd gen is kinda a down grade but i think it will be an upgrade for me as i can get a nice limited with leather and i can get 4wd. as for the land cruiser i dont really know how that would be a down grade as the land cruisers are pretty powerful and you get that full time 4wd and solid axles.

You are arguing my points against a 2nd gen by bring in two completely different vehicles. How is that relevant in any way?

IMO it sounds like you don't really know what you want. You have a new idea every week, none of which are ever followed through, because you are onto the next idea already. This thread is less than a day old and you are already on to two other vehicles... You are going to end up regretting your decision unless you take a more logical approach.

But what do I know...

well i really have just thought of the 2nd gen yesterday after seeing so many for under 4k on craigslist. i have however been looking at a 3rd gen for a while but hard to find under 200k miles and 4wd for under 6500 dollars. and i have been looking a LC 80 series for about a week. so im just trying to figure out what would be the most comfortable dd and capable trail rig for the weekends.

my 2nd gen suck's as a daily driver . on the weekend's in the dirt it kick's azz. think of this would you trade straght up your 4th gen for a 2nd gen ?

uhhh hell no.... were selling my 4th gen and buyin something older to get money to purchase furniture for our mountain house.. also to get a 4wd to get to the house in the winter

Regardless of how you look at it, it will be a huge downgrade. 4th Gen's are borderline luxury vehicles, while still being extremely capable off-road... You will miss it when it's gone. Unless you are out playing in very difficult trails every weekend, I just don't see the point. Older vehicles are very primitive in comparison, but perhaps you like that feel. They are great weekend warriors, but not something you want to be driving for the 99% you are on-road.

You would be surprised how capable a 2WD 4th gen is with a good driver. I haven't seen any pics of you on anything more difficult than a dirt road, but perhaps I missed all of your rock crawling shots. If you went out and tested the limits of your vehicle instead of assuming it's not enough from your computer monitor, I think you would be surprised.

As for the snow, I would invest in better tires and some chains.

Lots of Opinion going on here, but it is merely that, an opinion. Not all of us will share this same train of thought. I have ridden in/driven every 4runner model out there except for the 5th gen. I really don't see anything special going on in the 3rd gen 4th gen models, sure they ride more like a station wagon (read comfort) and have many gizmos that may make life easier for some people but they are not nearly as rugged and overbuilt as the 1st and second gen runners.

Merely opinion, just my take on it.

Thanks, that's a great example to support my statement that some people prefer the simpleness of an older vehicle. We will call it "rugged" as you put it. There's nothing wrong with an older vehicle, but you sacrifice the comfort that a newer vehicle offers.

It makes no difference to me what you get. Hopefully you will be happy with your choice. I am just giving you info and my opinion on it because I honestly don't see you being happy with it. It's much easier for someone old to justify an old vehicle, especially when technology becomes a factor. Considering you are a kid in high school I just don't think you will share the same thoughts on such an older vehicle.

Id just test drive it. That would settle any doubts.
