Light acceleration shudder

Hey guys and gals, Just got a 2006 t4r. I get a light shudder around 30-35 mph under light acceleration like pulling away from a light or rolling through traffic. seems to happen around 1-2 shift or 3-4 shift. got no lights or codes. got 160 K miles. Feels like slight misfire.

My girl's 2006 Tacoma had loose U-joints and it produced a similar sensation. Felt similar to when there's too much load on an engine on an upshift, kind of shuddered. Toyota said it was a known problem with U-joints on that year's Taco...not sure if it's the same for the Runner.

Do you get vibrations/noise at highway speeds as well? Her symptoms started just under load/acceleration but as it progressed it became evident at highway speeds as well.

NO. Only just before upshift under light acceleration. No issues above 45 mph whatsoever. Truwck's perfect otherwise. What's crazy is I read thousands of reviews before buying and never saw this issue anywhere!:sad:

Same here, didn't know it was an issue when researching. That being said, my family has had several generations of 4Runners and they've all been rock solid. I don't think its a major issue, just an annoyance IMHO.

What I've read is that one of three things happen. People 1) Replace torque convertor and transmission (a bit extreme IMHO). 2) Do a FULL transmission fluid exchange (I'm having this done tomorrow cost $350) will update on results, if any 3) Just live with it. Doesn't seem to lead to a major transmission failure from what I've read so far.

Alexandria Toyota service tech tells me they now recommend a fluid exchange at 100,000 miles.

Posting this here, too. Just in case somebody is doing a search on different search terms.

UPDATE:

Transmission flush performed with 12 quarts (?) of World Standard automatic transmission fluid.

RESULTS:

The shudder is 98% gone. From the third to fourth (?) shift its 100% gone.

It slightly shudders between 2nd and 3rd on slight uphills and if I'm not really pressing on the throttle and just leisurely driving up slight uphills. Weird. If I didn't have this issue prior, wouldn't notice it at all.

Shifts much better, as somebody mentioned before after they had this done - like butter.

I also had a slight whine upon decel (from 35 to 0, whether in neutral or in gear) and that has pretty much disappeared, too.

The flush was $350 with a $30 dollar discount, so $320 out the door. They did the whole monitor temperatures and computer when going through the flush process. For a simple flush, was rather complicated. Reason why I didn't want to mess with it myself.

CONCLUSION: Complete transmission flush worked for me. 2006 4Runner Sport w/ 150,000 miles.

Anybody have a different outcome? Just realized after revisiting this thread, that i'm not even noticing an issue anymore after several months of driving. Not sure if cause and effect, but hasn't come back.

I had that problem before, did 2 drain and fills a few months apart and changed the fluids in the front and rear differential as well as the t-case. I also hit all the zerk fittings with fresh grease. I do tow and off road a lot, so I service the transmission every summer and the axels and t-case every other summer. After I did the 2 drain and fills, the shudder went away. The previous owner never changed the trans fluid and I bought it with 110k on the clock. I'm about to hit 180k and she is showing no signs of quitting.

I should have noted bought mine used with over 130K on the clock, but it was a California all highway vehicle.

i feel it in mine as well, '06 sport 118K miles. might have to try this.

Just a follow up after a few years and a lot of added miles on the clock. Shudder is pretty much gone, don't notice it or have chosen to ignore it, but I'm not noticing it anymore after the full flush and change of transmission oil.

Doing a flush ia never a bad decision. If it comes back add a tube of Shudder Fixx. Helps about 98.9% of all similar problems.

Doing flush only fixed about 50% of mine. Shudder Fixx did the rest in 5 miles.

Shudder at low speeds

I’ve just noticed this happening today on my 2010 Trail. It just turned over 100K and i had the fluids changed ( and trans flushed) a month ago (2000 miles). I had not made the connection to the transmission shifting possibly causing it. Will check that out tomorrow.. what is Shudder Fixx? A transmission additive? Will maybe try some of that and see what happens..Weird as it appears to have just started within the last 2000 miles or so... Hope it doesn’t crater. I’ve got 1100 miles to drive in the next two weeks!

180k ish shudder began
Dealer flush did nothing.
Shudder Fixx worked for immediately.

14k miles later with no further issues.

Get a tube of shudder fix. Just happened to mine. Problem is gone
