Light Mount - Your Thoughts

Hey guys, I've been working on a mount for the 5th Gen 4Runners, and wanted to get your feedback. I designed this for numerous reasons.



- I like the look.

- When mounting lights behind the grille, you lose a lot of the "spill" light. This is especially true for the Baja Designs LP Series Lights with the "side light". Also anything behind the lower grille, is like a giant fog light to me.

- The 2020 5th Gen now has the radar plate mounted in the grille.

- Keeps the light at or above the headlight level, giving you better light further down the road.



Specs:



- Does not interfere with the Safety Sense System.

- Adjustable (the bar can slide back and forth to accommodate a deeper light)

- Easy to install, No cutting, and no bumper removal. Can be easily installed from the engine bay.

- Can accommodate various lights, up to a 30" light bar.

- Strong, no light vibrations.

I was working on getting prices myself from Rago fabr. For mounts and cross bar to remove my front bumper and was planning on putting LP6’s behind my front grille. This was my only option I was finding with that safety sense. That set up looks pretty good. Looks like I will be holding off till I see what these cost. So you will not have to remove the front bumper?

Correct, do not need to remove the bumper. Install takes about 30 minutes.

I dig it! very similar to the "defiant" light bar mount i ran on my titan years ago. Guessing it runs in and bolts to the frame horns? If so, super solid.

Funny you mention that, I ran a Defiant bar on my Taco many moons ago, similar, however I am not using the frame horns. Using the top of the crash bar. I will share more on this later.

Would this work on a pre-facelift 5th gen?

The only thing I see it looks like your can move the lights out further since there is adjustments to where you want the lights mounted. I already bought raptor lights I did not add yet. I was waiting till I added these cause of removing the front bumper. Also it will depend on the cost of this bracket. Maybe you can do install pics how you ran the lighting into the cab and hooking the wires up. I have been doing all my research on which wires I need from bajadesigns. Running these wires with the correct switch inside the cab you also need the correct volt push button for them. Just a little info if anyone else is looking to do on the newer 4runners.

There will be a fully detailed, illustrated install guide shortly. (Taking photos this weekend). As for my wiring Lol, it's very elaborate. I have a SwitchPros panel, the distribution block is mounted inside a waterproof housing (I know this is waterproof regardless) so when you pop the hood, it just looks like another fuse box. All my wiring runs to that. It is mounted behind my air box. Previous 4Runner I had is mounted behind the existing fuse box. Since the addition of safety sense that area is occupied by a new fuse box from the factory.

Awesome looking product! You know approx. how much weight this holds?

Well I weigh 185lbs and I was standing on it. The brackets that go through the grille are .375 Hot Rolled Carbon Steel, the mounting points behind the grille are .188 Hot Rolled Carbon Steel. Massive overkill. It's tied to the bracket behind the grille with 8 1/4-20 flange bolts.

I think this looks great! Could it be mounted on the bottom part of the grille for those of us that don't have the safety sense box?

This! Is a great I idea. I will see if this could work! Wouldn't be hard, I just need to add additional mounting points to my brackets.

Interesting. Can you flip the bar so the lights can be mounted under it as opposed to on top?

For powder coating may I suggest you ask for something along the lines of a

Polyester TGIC Super Durable or a Polyurethane Super Durable. If you can get either of these that are also Anti Graffiti type coatings I would recommend. Lastly perhaps a fine sand texture in the above may be the most aesthetically appealing.

Strongly suggest no river or peel type textures even if they are SDs.

I like the look. I think it will look really good with that style light, but I'm not sure about a bar light.
Easy way to fix that problem... now i need round spots!

Spots are classic look, IMO. I have a secret obsession with all the 4WD's in Australia, a lot of them run a similar set up.

Hope we see a update soon from one premier. There is probably more companies working on a work around for the safety sense for the lighting.

This was mentioned earlier, going to see if I can work it into the design and see if it will work with the safety-sense.

A 27" light bar fits perfect in the upper grill section. This one from apexoverland was the only one I can find, the mounting holes even line up to existing holes that are behind the grill. Only downside is that you need to trim out the upper grill and retain the outer structure.

If you play around a bit with the mounting brackets, you don't have to trim at all.

If you play around a bit with the mounting brackets, you don't have to trim at all.

I could have but I did this so I didn't have to buy the upper grill trim to go with the pro grill. At the time there were no cheap options other than going oem.

A tad bit narrower and a little less expensive and I'd order today!!! I've been tinkering on and off of a similar DIY setup for a while.

I'd much prefer my lights outside the grill.

That said..... very nice!

Very interested in an option that would allow us to run external spots in the lower grill. I have a 2019 pro and no sensor to deal with. So I'd like to run 4 lp4s in the lower grille externally. I think they'll fit I just need someone to make the mount for the lower grill!

Might be an odd one out but I prefer Light Mounts that don't cover the "Toyota" logo but other than that It looks like a great mount!

If anyone is looking for a light bar mount I have a brand new NFab mount goes behind the grille. You can mount bajadesigns LP4’s or other lights on to it. I decided not to use it. I put my 20 inch led bar behind my Pro upper grille.

rago fab behind the grill mounts, then buy the "outside the grille" mounts option from rago fab, copy those onto some thicker metal that is also longer to space it away from the grille, then measure the width, and order extrusion from tnutz, bolt the extrusion on one side, use carriage bolts to mount said lights to extrusion. bolt other side on.

If youre interested in specs, let me know i can dig up my email order for the extrusion. I'm running 3 baja designs on the outside of the grille using this method.
