I have a 2001 SRS with just over 80k on it. Quite some time ago I started hearing a very light "whump whump whump" that sounds like it's coming from the drive shaft area that is the same speed at the wheel rotation. I know that this is normally something tire related but it doesn't sound like tires and I don't "feel" anything in the steering wheel. The "noise" did go away for a short while when I rotated the tires front to back, back to front, same side, and the came back at about the same volume.
I have Michelins, two new on the front and two middle-aged ones on the rear. The noise didn't change when I put the two new ones on. I only hear it at around 35-40 mph, probably because that's the speed that it's easiest to hear. Logic tells me it's tire/wheel related but my gut tells me it's not.
Any ideas as to how I can locate/analyze this and whether it could turn into a problem? It's been going on for a number of months - maybe a year or more - and hasn't gotten worse.
