i wanted to put a lightbar of some sort on my 04.

i want it mainly because i go snowboarding alot and plenty of times me and my friends are the last ones out of the parking lot going down the mountain and its pretty dark in some areas. i also would like it for wheeling etc.

is it better to mount on the bumper? or on the roof?
i personally like the look on the roof better but i have i set of racks that i use for snowboarding. will the snowboard get in the way if i mount the roof?

i was also looking into getting a roof basket thing. ive seen alot of people with the basket type thing on top i just dont know what its called. anyone with these put snowboards on top? how does that work out?

thanks

I have the defiant bar and like it a lot, I also have a yakima megawarrior rack that I am putting some lights on this week. A lot of cargo racks have accessory bars to mount your snowboard with. I have 2 bike mounts on mine, I don't see why you couldn't just as easily put snowboard mounts up there.

If you put them on the roof get lights with a spot beam, from what I've read you get a lot of light refraction on the hood with roof lights if you use driving or fog beams.

Not sure if it's important to you or not but roof mounted lights with a basket will decrease your MPG by 1-2 and create some wind noise.

I've been in the same situation as you on the mountain and I tend to use my bumper lights more often than my roof lights. Roof lights tend to reflect off of falling snow in front of the windshield that may be distracting to some.

If you use the basket method, you can mount the lights level with the basket and have the snowboard rack above it. at least for the rack that i'm thinking.

Or you can just go with a low profile rack replacement like gobi or perkins that run the full length of the roof and never interfere with the snowboards.

does youre runner in your avatar have the defiant light bar?

im starting to lean that way after reading about the light reflecting off snow etc. also the baja rack type setup is a little out of my price range. ive been looking at some baskets and they are like $500? am i not looking in the right place or is that about right.

if i go with the defiant light bar what lights do you recommend

I have had both a Defiant bar as well as roof mounted lights. I ditched my lightbar when I did my body lift since it no longer lined up.

Here are some pics with and without the lightbar.

Regarding lighting, i prefer Lightforces or PIAA's.

what do you mean that it didnt line up anymore. how much did the baja rack run you

When he installed his body lift, the brackets didn't line up with the lower bumper opening.

Full bajarack's like Blair's and Josh's go for $525

^^^^ this

is pretty much what im gonna do i think. i have snowboards and im not sure how well 4 boards and gear is gonna fit in the back.

Yeah it's much better to throw them up on a rack. Let me know if you are interested in piaa 520 ion's or atp's. I might know someone considering selling his :)
