No it doesn't, it has connectors. There's clips for example that hold it on to the rear axle, but those come undone by a flat head screw driver.

The only difference between the wheel speed sensors on the front hubs and the rears are the fronts are held in place by a bolt, the rears use a stud and nut.

If anyone here does any wheeling, SDHQ makes a great armor guard kit that protects the sensors from impact.

Got it. I may have to crawl under my truck and take another peak. I saw it was very simple from the rear axle to the wheel. Simple clips, and unplugging from the sensor. I just didn't see where the wire came from before the rear axle.

You need it scanned with TIS - The toyota scan tool. Not a generic ODBII reader as they generally won't report any information for non engine related codes that are module specific.

There will be history, so I would not worry about the lights being active or not.

You can buy the cable on Amazon run it on your own computer for about $25 (its really a pirated version) or you can take to the dealer and pay them $100 each time something comes up.

It can be a bit of a pain to get up and running, but I have a post on here that outlines how to install it in a VM on your computer. Titled something like TIS installation guide.

Check that your tailgate is closed properly. I've had that dashboard lighting up and beeping due to that. I know it's been over a week, but sometimes I go that long without opening it (other than the glass).

we had a snow storm and I maybe drove 4-5 miles in 4wd (hi).

Otherwise it doesn't get used.

I also put in a K&N drop in filter and shortly after (a week) these lights started coming on. Since then I have converted back to the original filter but lights still come one.


What lights: ABS, BRAKE, TRACTION CONTROL, 4LO FLASHING (there has been one occurrence where it was just 4LO and traction control)

When do they come on: Could be when I first start the car up... could be 5 feet after I leave the garage, could be on my way into work. Its not like a bump or anything sets it off or me trying to engage the 4wd system.


Research: I understand that some things could cause this:
1) gas cap - I have had 3-4 fill ups since first going off. Gas caps "clicks" and everything seems normal.
2) take your battery terminals off - I did this but then read that it has to be done for 5 minutes... mine was a simple minute disconnection.
3) wheel speed sensor - need research to see locations and how to

its getting annoying because literally today (the light hasn't gone off since sunday) I was thinking you know that light has not gone on... and then bam.


I have a 3/2 lift - its been 2 years now so doubt that has much to do with it.

Curious what people have done to fix this other then whats listed.

I am going to take it in to the dealer however everytime I get ready to... the light goes off - do I wait until its on just over and over?

I can go out there this afternoon and it might be on? might be off? and shutting the car off sometimes does it... to reset it.

We are in a warm up 40's yesterday and today after being in the 20s and a snow storm.

so just got a call...

they have been looking at the truck and running several tests for some time. (I told them to start with the wheel speed sensor).

They replaced that (nothing-still on).

Went through the "steps" and are on to the wheel bearing.

Good thing is its under warranty and the guy is a fellow lifted truck owner so hes keeping my car under warranty when we could get into a battle that due to the bigger tires, the lift yada yada yada.

Give another update when its fixed.:high5:

got the vehicle back this morning.

it was the right wheel bearing - head scratcher because I only have 40k...

judging off the service write up.

-swapped out wheel speed sensor (not it)
-swapped out abs sensor (not it)

all under warranty:cheer2:

Thanks for this post. Had the same issue this morning. Mine turned out to be solution #1. I turned off my car, removed the gascap, and reinstalled. Lights went off and haven't come back on.

Note: I filled up the gas tank yesterday late morning. Parked it for the night after a few quick stops on the way home. Temps dropped last night. This morning the issue first appeared on this morning's commute.

Note: I filled up the gas tank yesterday late morning. Parked it for the night after a few quick stops on the way home. Temps dropped last night. This morning the issue first appeared on this morning's commute.

Had the same problem as crazy as it sounds it happen to be a short in my headlights. I originally swap headlight to LEDs, had them over a year then dash board lighted up. Speed sensor, ABS Sensor codes came up dealer warranty and the parts and still had lights. After the flashed the ECU then found that the lights would come back on when they turned the headlights on and codes came back. Bulbs worked and turned on must have had a short in the fans or something, anyhow went back to the stock bulbs and lights have never came back on

having this problem for a second time

Having this problem again, which is super frustrating. had it about 6 months ago out of the blue. OBD computer said it was my right passenger rear speed sensor....replaced it. lights didnt go away...I checked all the other ones as well. Checked out the harness, seeing that I do have a 3 inch lift on my T4R...all looks well. Took it to a shop and after they took apart my rear, they said my bearing on my rear passenger tire was shot, as well as some other wear in the rear from riding on the bearing for a while...I dont know if i believed them, but the lights did in fact go away...as well as $1000. Driving yesterday the same lights came back on again when i was on the highway at 60mph. nothing changed in the driving...didnt hit anything or make any maneuvers...Im not looking to spend another $1000 for a six month fix. I thought Toyotas were reliable???

I’ve been encountering this since middle of march. VSC, 4LO, Center Diff all flashing. Restarting the vehicle would clear it. It would show up after the vehicle had sat for a bit. I hooked it up to TIS and saw two errors: C1408 Open or Short in Rear Speed Sensor LH Circuit and C1422 Master Cylinder Pressure Zero Point High. I replaced the left rear sensor and had the issue again after the vehicle had sat. Haven’t yet hooked it up to TIS again, but want to gather some ideas on what to troubleshoot next.

There could be other things going on with the codes the 4R was throwing..., but here's a method that I use whenever I have the very same Instrument Cluster issues: "Yaw Rate acceleration/and Center point steering calibration!"

It won't cost you anything, and you can do this Yourself (No Scan-tool needed) ...and no help from the dealership!!! Follow these instructions to the letter and you'll be fine; be sure to let us know how you made out!

After changing the speed sensor and performing the calibration, the issue wasn’t resolved. I ended up replacing the wiring harness and the issue hasn’t appeared in a few weeks and the vehicle has sat without being driven. Usually that’s when the issue would occur. So I ended up fixing the issue with a new wiring harness and performing the calibration once again. Thanks rigtec for the instructions!
