I've been wondering if it's possible to buy the climate controls from the Limited edition and install it in the Trail? Would this work? On long road trips I'm constantly having to turn on or off the AC and it would be great to have dual zones... I'm assuming this is a standalone control unit and not integrated with the ECU or is it? Thoughts?

sigh thanks i figured it wouldn't be plug and play.... so stupid that we spend so much on these things and it doesn't have dual or auto climate.....

Toyota really should include a few basics- climate control, auto headlights, and smart key. The first two I can build a system to add on my own with a few hours of work and less than $100 in electronics. The smart key system is beyond my skill.
If climate control meant just converting the existing temperature dial to a thermostat and the fan dial to a "max fan speed" setting so that the temperature setting would then set the nominal temperature goal, the measured temp would use a simple algorithm to choose the fan speed from zero to the max the dial was set at based on the difference between actual temp and goal temp, would that work for most people?

The whole reason dual climate control came about was because people can't figure out (or are too lazy) to reach up and use the vents to control the amount of air reaching them. If you think about it, having dual climate in as small a space as a vehicle is silly. Like the air from one side won't reach the other side? Really? Also it's not like one will want the heat on full blast while the other one wants sub zero air! It's usually one wants 68 degrees while the other wants 71 degrees. Moving the vent deflector will accomplish that.

Amen brother. It's in the same category (IMO) as auto headlights, keyless ignition, memory seats, etc. /whining/ Oh man! Do I really have to turn on my headlights manually?
Although, dual climate control (again IMO) is simply a pacifier to make the wife think it's warmer/colder on her side.

All auto digital, button based climate controls and worse, dual controls, is just TERIBLE in practice. Every car we've had outside my yota trucks have been that way and they are CRAP.
When I get in my car and it's hot I hit two knobs in 1 second and instantly have cold air blasting at me. Want that with any other fancy digital dual climate control... get ready to push a button about 50 times (x2). for both temp AND fan speed. You could accidentally run down an entire mall of people trying to fiddle with those things.
And specifically for the dual: Everytime! one person is a little too warm and the other a little too cold and there starts the comfort settings war where every 5 minutes each person turns their side up/down till you got full heat and full ac on their side.
I LOVE the giant knobs that instantly do exactly what you want them to do with no guessing or wasted time want to be a little warmer or colder? ADJUST YOUR PERSONAL VENTS! (And driver gets preference at all times for the controls) Some things are utterly perfect the way they are!

I closed the 2 passenger dash vents about 2 years ago because my wife was always complaining that I don't have dual zone controls for her. She has never noticed- only to gripe that my truck is always cold inside, lmao.

*It looks like this is a plug and play retrofit based on some time spent in the FSM and parts list however it requires more then just the climate control unit and is $$$. To my knowledge no one has done this in a 5th gen, I would love to try but am not willing to assume it works before spending hundreds (if not over 1k) in parts to hope it works.
*From a practicality standpoint its a gimmick, as [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] said, to keep any type of temperature delta in that close of space with the limited equipment onboard is laughable.

why are you touching it if its automatic? in my BMW I had the temp set and it stayed there, you don't have to adjust it, it was perfect an awesome. In this vehicle I have to start it on low so its not blasting cold air, then after the engine warms up I have to turn up the fan, then whey i get too hot i have to turn the temp knob some and maybe adjust the fan, then when i start to get too cold i have to adjust it some more, etc...

Look, let me let you in on a secret, youngster: You control the temperature UNLESS you have your wife with you. You then relinquish control gladly and use your window for any additional personal cooling. This is what works.

haha these replies are great - yes I don't really need dual zone but having climate control would be great. This is 2016 not 1995 (Even my 1995 NSX has climate control). Set the temp and forget it.
Driving back from FL last week, every 15-20 mins I'd have to turn on and off the AC.... really annoying and distracting from driving especially at the price point we're paying for these things. Climate controls are not new and not expensive. I do like the large dials so you don't have to look at it while driving most of the time.

4th gen here but figured I could chime in. I have a Limited and had dual controls until the circuit burned out. I picked a non-dual control in place of the dual, my wife and I both like it better.
