If you plan is to do moderate to heavy off-roading... you might be much better off with the trail (unless you plan to modify.. and then it simply does not matter).
The approach and departure angles on the limited are worse than the trail and sr5. This can be changed with aftermarket bumpers or even throwing the sr5 bumper covers on... The older 2010-2013 trails actually had the best bumper covers for durability... in hard core off-road which most people don't do with 4runners.
I personally think the salesman was on the right track (not the part about it breaking though, unless he meant the bumper covers).. If offroading is your goal... then the trail just makes more sense for the avg buyer. The rear locker makes a significant difference in more extreme scenarios.
But if you plan to modify it... They are all really the same thing under the skin. No real difference in durability.
