Limited traction

I have a 1998 Toyota 4runner that has limited traction on the least bit of snow or ice. Not safe to drive....It seems to do better in 2 wheel drive than 4x4. I just bought it several weeks ago and don't know too much about it. The tires are somewhat new however, the back tire is worn just a bit on the inside. I just had them ballanced. I'm stumped! I bought it so my wife would be safe, but it's the worse vehecle I've ever driven. There's got to be something wrong. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

What tires (make, model & size)? What rides are you comparing it to?


The "better in 2wd" comment: Is that typically on thin, packed snow while making lower speed turns?

I was told possible sway bar. The tires are 16's just bought this past summer. As far as the time of fishtail......any snow, we just got a dusting last night and it's fishtailing every time I the tires cross over the snow. I'm stumped.

We need more information.

What brand, kind of tires? Are all 4 the same? If they are new, why is one worn?

What vehicle are you comparing it to?

What are the road conditions like? fresh snow? Slush? dry packed? Plowed and smooth? Ice?

What speed and type of driving are you doing? Slow and gradual or driving like "normal?"

Even with serious tires (new all-terrain) my truck will slide, loose grip in the right conditions.

Without studs, almost every vehicle will slip/slide on ice.

It should not fishtail more in 4WD. It should understeer more. Are you sure it is going into 4WD?
