line level converter

hi, i am a new owner of a 05 4-runner sport...it has the baic cd player....i am trying to hook a line output converter(the little white boxes that you tap into the speaker wires and it converts the signal to rca plugs...well i hooked it up behind the cd player and after everything else was hooked up i cannot get any sound and i feel for sure it is the converter.....is ther anything special about the radios that may not allow it to work???
do i need to tap into the speaker wire just before it goes into the speaker??? thanks

If you have the 4runner sport, you'll have the 10-speaker JBL stereo system. Easy to tell - the Head Unit has a JBL logo on it. This HU doesn't have any speaker outputs. It only has a left & right line-level type output on it. What happens with the JBL is there's an amp in the back of the truck, and all the speaker wires run to that amp.

So, if you have a standard box that hooks into the speaker wires at the back of the HU, the likely reason you're getting no sound from the box is because on your HU, the "speaker connections" aren't actually connected to anything inside the HU. Because the HU doesn't have the capability to drive any speakers; that's the job of the amp.

If you really need this function, you have a couple of options. (1) Tap into the speaker wires from the amp in the back of the truck. (2) Tap into the line-out signals from your HU. Someone posted a wiring diagram in this forum for the JBL which shows these connections; doing a search will probably locate it.

I have a 2005 Sport Edition and it came with the base radio...The JBL is a option and I'm glad I didn't waste my money on it..

Lucky you. Mine came standard with the JBL, much to my regret. I really wanted to put the Scion HU in, but without rewiring the truck it's just not possible. Sigh.

It should work just fine as long as you tapped into the correct wires.

If your converter has an output level adjustment, make sure it is not turned all the way down. I used line lever converters to run signal to my amp for my sub. Mine did have the adjustable output and it was all the way UP out of the box, which made for a signal i could not tune at the amp, it had way too much bass. I put it around half way and it did the trick.

I used the left and right from the front speakers. I did it this way because it makes adjusting the system easier then if hooked to the rears. Since the fader is usually set more to the rear, i didnt want the bass to be overpowering while not having much mid out of the front. Does that make sense? Im not sure if i am explaining it that well. I have had systems where the stereo place did the install. the sub was hooked to the rears and it seemed more difficult to get it to sound the way i wanted. It has a better balance this way.

Yeah..That's the same way I probably would do it. I asked because I remember someone on here posting that they tapped the center channel, but can't remember who.
