Because of LinkedIn, I get tons of recruiters offering me job opportunities. I actually landed a nice paying job from one of those but once I started I knew after 3 days that I didn't want to be there and quit. I'm basically unemployable in a traditional job sense and just mainly use linkedin to keep up with people I know and help connect other people to opportunities. LinkedIn is a good thing if you want to maintain or develop a professional network.

thats one of my biggest fears is that i can't be happy in a traditional setting at all, but i thought id give it a go. i can be bought.

I thought I could be bought, too. Money was good and dependable and I got a nice office with a window to the river I grew up fishing on. The work was such that with my experience I could put it on cruise control. But then there was that whole "show up everyday on-time, meeting after meeting, and even at my level, having to ask for vacation approval, etc." I found the whole experience rather soul crushing compared to my current gig. I mean, I know jobs are necessary and basically good things. Some people even like theirs. But once you break free of traditional corporate structure it is hard to jump back in and find it satisfying. Good luck with whatever you're aiming for.

It's useful to have a resume, I give the link in my resume in case an employer wants to see it. I do need to update it some... But most of the offers I get are out of state and not really worthwhile to me.
friend of mine, who was a UT computer engineering drop out and who has drug related charges on his record, was at a small IT firm here in Austin. Was told to check into LinkedIn. 8mos later he gets a message from HR at Google. 5mos later he accepts a job offer from Google that started with that message. He's now one of the top dogs over Google Fiber.
I need to get it updated and actually use it. Can't hurt, and I'm pretty miserable in my current situation.

I got one awhile ago, in some ways it's nice since I can put more stuff than I can put on a resume. Also being young and in college it helps to look for jobs (though I have one) and let people find me, just another option for getting your name out there. I got an offer from SpaceX due to LinkedIn, though I've never known anyone else who had anything result from LinkedIn.

It completely depends on your job. My GF is a nurse and could care less.
I'm in technology and LinkedIn is pretty serious. There are a lot of recruiters and if you have very low expectations, a good profile and good online resume you will get contact letters, emails from time to time.
Nothing negative, nothing to lose. Its all upside.
If you are actively job hunting focus on Monster, InDeed, and DICE first.

I'm on it. It is kind of interesting to keep up with people you used to work with (and liked enough to bother being connected via linkedin). I've been contacted through it for a few offers, but turned them all down as every one was in the North East. Sorry anyone from there, I just have no desire to live there - kinda over the whole winter thing. 
There are some other perks, if you're into networking. I "follow" a couple of groups, and from time to time receive invitations to local gatherings/events related to those industries.
It's a convenient place to have/keep letters of recommendation, and stay in contact with those who give them (in case you need to use them as reference in future).
Only problem I have with linkedin is something I've heard about their android app (not sure if it's the same for apple). It is said if you download the app, it likes to bombard everyone in your contacts list with invitations to join linkedin. I don't like that. At all. As a result, I have refused to download and use the app.

I've had a Linkedin account for years. My sister is a recruiter and she got me on it way back before the economic collapse of 2008. In all those years I could not honestly say it has ever gotten me a job. Plenty of contacts, lots of interesting industry related articles and discussions, and absolutely TONS of recruiters messaging me all the time, but every job I've had since then (six, but who's counting) have been via networking or working with recruiters I knew prior to the recession.
So I won't say its all bad, but if I were job hunting I would try a more directed resource like Monster or Ladders.

I don't think it's quite that simple. There's very little 'social' aspect to LinkedIn, while Facebook is almost entirely social, in nature. LinkedIn also seems - to me, anyway - to be more purpose-driven (get a job, recruit an employee, etc .). After you've fully utilized the 'connect' aspect of Facebook, on the other hand, it seems kind of pointless to me and more of a time-waster. I'm sure I'm in the minority on that, but that's my perception. That and I really don't give two sh&%s what someone's "status" might be, nor do I actually believe they care about my own
.I think about the only thing they have in common is that they are both made for connecting with others. But the reasons for that connection are what make them so different.
I've been on LinkedIn, but don't really 'use' it, mainly because I'm not looking for a job right now. I have been able to connect with some helpful individuals in my field who work for various state, federal, and foreign government agencies; as well as non-profits and similar conservation groups. That's been a great benefit to me. I also plan to retire and move to a s econd career, eventually, so maybe I'll be more of a LI 'user' at that time.
