lock actuator fails for 6th time

I have a 2012 Limited and both of my front ones were dead when I bought it last April. I bought 2 new ones off of Ebay for about $30 each. Took me about an hour and a half (1.5 hours) total to do both doors and haven't any issues ever since except we forgot to hook up the manual unlock (for the key) on the driver door. Way better than the $700 the dealership wanted.

While you're correct that getting the parts from eBay and doing it yourself is certainly the cheapest way, I was mostly curious if the Toyota dealership actuators in 2018 have any actual improvements in quality and lifespan. If $600 per door gets a permanent fix that doesn't require me to disassemble/reassemble every door in the 4Runner repeatedly, I'd gladly pay it.

OP has replaced door actuators on a 2011 Trail multiple times. I have the same year and model and I've had no issues with the door actuators in 95,000 miles.

Ditto this, only I have 102,000 miles with zero issues. I;ve never replaced a single one.

I also have a 99 4runner with 182,000 miles on it and have never replaced a single one. I bet it's the same part........

Figured I'd weigh in with my experience so far.

I bought a CPO 2015 TE about a month ago. Front passenger lock actuator was dead--either it got missed during CPO inspection and we didn't notice during the test drive, or it drew its last breath during our test drive. Dealer replaced it for free the next day. About 3 weeks later, rear driver's side door actuator failed. Had it replaced under CPO bumper-to-bumper warranty ($50 deductible).

Hopefully this is the end of it, but some of these posts with people replacing lock actuators multiple times is making me nervous. Makes me wonder if the actuators are even the problem, or if the BCMs have a problem and are toasting actuators or something like that.

Interesting thought about something upstream is causing the failures. FWIW this affects the 200 series Land Cruiser as well. I replaced them on 3 out of 4 doors on my 2013 200 and there are a decent number of other folks with the same issue.

2015 TRDPRO My first actuator went out at 38K, they fixed it for free as a good faith gesture. About 10,000 miles later both my drivers side doors stop working. I got an estimate of 478 per door. Opened a case with Toyota. Took my truck in last week for 60K mile service and again asked my dealer to call on my case # with Toyota. They fixed both doors for free at 60K.

Even with a warranty I dont know why anyone would mess with the dealership for this l, it takes maybe 15 minutes and the part is $4

Since this post is back to the top, (I've spent lots of time reading it and the other threads regarding actuators) figure I might as well add myself to the list of 4Runner door lock failures...

My passenger side went out first, then the drivers side. This was admittedly quite awhile and have yet to get to it. Winter/no garage/pulling door panels combo sucks... it's def. an infuriating problem though and gotta get to it as the weather warms up.

Seriously, wtf Toyota...? How can such a relatively simple mechanism that's been part of vehicles for decades (my '85 Toyota cabover spacevan had them, lol) go bad in vehicles that are otherwise well known for reliability... FWIW I was quoted $240 a door by the dealer. No thanks... granted this was at at dealer with one of the worst reps in the area but still...

Oh well, grateful this is the only real issue I've had as I approach 85K (knocks on wood)

Lock number 3 (right rear) just died on me. Still under CPO warranty so getting it replaced next week.

The last remaining original lock (front left) has had issues a couple of times, but is good 98% of the time. Dealer says they can't do anything about it until it fails for good, they have to hold parts replaced under warranty and Toyota does spot checks. If they replace a part that Toyota finds to be good, Toyota rejects the warranty claim and the dealer eats the cost.

2012 TE here, 155,000 miles. Drivers door lock has been dead a few months now. Was too lazy to research until now, looks like this is a fairly common problem.
