Locked Doors, Remote problem.

I can't open my 4runner with keys, because all the doors and the rear hatch have been changed. Anyway, I usually open my car with the remote. Went shopping today and the car locked nicely. Came out of the shop and the car wouldn't unlock. Instead the alarm went off. My key fob only has one button that does both the locking and unlocking. Im not sure whether its an aftermarket alarm system or not. Now, every time i press the button alarm goes off for about 4 seconds, then stops (The lights dont flash on the outside though and the alarm sounds exactly like the beep you get when locking the car only multiple times). Holding down the button on the remote usually makes the alarm go on. Now, no matter what i do (Press or hold down the button) the car alarm goess off for 4 seconds and the doors wont unlock.

I have a 1997 Limited 4runner. I tried searching answers from google, but no luck there. Perhaps someone has an idea what the hell is going on.:noidea:

How about

replacing the remote battery? Just a guess, but trying to help. I know you don't need to hear this now, but ya gotta get a spare key somehow....

Called a shop, they came and unlocked the doors for me. Unfortunately the alarm seems to be broken. Drove home with the alarm going nuts. I suppose it just malfunctioned, going to get it fixed tomorrow. And while Im at it ill go and get a spare key too. :rant::rant: :uzi:

My alarm did the same

thing - would go off for no reason, but could be turned off, then eventually did what your did, went off continuously. I unplugged the horns (i know dangerous!) until I got it replaced the next day. Mine was installed by the regional importer (Gulf States Toyota) and worked well until it didn't.

I'm not so much concerned with the alarm aspect, I got it cuz of the remote start. Glad you got out of your jam, yeah!

Man I wish i would've known how to unplug the horns. That alarm is so loud it could kill potential car thieves.
