Depends on what kind and what it's going into. Do a bit of research to decide on what kind and then ask more specifically. Hard to help otherwise.
 
how much are you looking to spend? ARB air lockers are dope, yet expensive, and the air compressor is harder to install. ratchet types are better, allows for you tires to spin at different speeds in corners, but spool lockers are cheapest, easiest to install, but kill your tires and are full time. a cheap way for a spool locker is a lincoln locker. :) just weld the spider gears to the carrier
 
I vote for a Toyota electric locker. The housing needs to be modified to accept it but its the best locker out there hands down.
 
It will be for a 94 SR5 3.0. Stock, nothing added yet, Im leaning to the air locker, And wanted to do it myself. What kind of trouble might i run into.

-Can someone tell me if one can be installed on a 85 4runner 4cyl rear diff.

-If so how much modding would I be looking at?

I'm asking this because I belive there are some lockers in the newer 4runners at the junk yard. Thanks
 
I'm installing two TRD elockers front and rear in my 85 this summer. You can get them with 4.10, 4.30 or 4.56 ratio from the factory. You have to modify the axles but it's not too involved. You also need to wire them up. Several different ways to do that but also not overly challenging.

Just google "Toyota elocker" and read till your heat's content...

Come back after reading for a while if you have some specific questions.
 
Alright, Did a little light reading, and am going to go with the toyota elocker. Thank you and i will prob be back with a please help 4runner in pieces what do i do.

Yes, but only if you regear. You can use your existing gears but you can't buy them new with 4.88 gears. If I was going 4.88 then I would buy a used one and regear with your 4.88's. Both Marlin Crawler and Inchworm sell new ones regeared to 4.88 but they're not cheap.
 
If you want to get a used one, then go to a website like this:

Search for 1997 Toyota 4Runner, Differential Assembly, Rear with locker.

There are a few years that the 4Runner came with these as an option (and the Tacoma did as well) but all similar parts will appear. The same diff will fit your 4Runner front and rear axles.

You will need to wire it. There are several ways to do so. Downey makes a manual cable kit but I've heard it's a PIS. Besides, why install an elocker and leave out the "e".

I'm going to wire mine with an FZJ80 diff lock switch and elocker ECU but that's probably the most expensive way to wire them up.
 
I am going to re-gear also, im going to need to to turn my 35's that are coming. Also a lift but not sure which one yet. Any suggestions?
 
I went with the OME full kit, heavy front springs, medium rear and heavy shocks all around. I made sure I got their anti-inversion shackles and greasable pins as well. Nice kit, nice ride and you will get 3+ inches out of it, even though they advertise it as 2.5". This kit will allow you to fit 33's no problem but 35's might be an issue without rubbing. I'm pretty sure they will go on but you might wind up doing some fender trimming.
