Locking Hubcaps

On my 1986 4runner i have manual locking hubcaps, and I was wondering if you have to get out and lock them to put it in 4wd. If you don't have to get out then what are they for?

Have OME 3" lift coming from member ZeniTH (hopefully). Will be putting rock sliders on as soon as I find a good deal - or a few days have passed and I can't wait.

Yes you have to get out and turn those to "lock" to put it in 4wd, and also move the shifter to either 4H or 4L. to fully engage 4wd. When you leave 4wd you have to move those to "free", then back just a couple inches to completely unlock the hub.
