I'm going to it but won't be there til Saturday around noon til Sunday night before heading back as I have to work that Friday night.

Okay... total honesty coming your way.
I've got a 2010 Limited WITH 4 wheel drive. I bought it because we're hoping to start a family soon and we'll need to be able to haul our kid and our two dogs (60 and 70 pound greyhounds... hence the username). It's my everyday ride (14 mile/35 minute commute each way), so I went for plush over versatility. In other words, I bought the Limited for the great ride and features over the Trail Edition knowing that I'd rarely have it in situations where I'd truly be off-road. But we made sure to get 4 wheel drive, as we're often in Minnesota/Wisconsin during the winters.
I'd LOVE to do something like this event, but... I know nothing about fixing broken auto gear on the trail... or for that matter, the money needed to fix all kinds of broken gear on the trail. I honestly don't even know if my Limited can handle the trails that an SR5 or Trail Edition can. (I'm pretty confident that my Limited can go where an SR5 can go... but am I wrong in that?)
Will I be able to do any off-roading in a 4x4 Limited? It's stock (including tires). Straight off the lot in November.
Tell me your thoughts... am I crazy to consider something like this event?

there will be a number of trails you can run and great guides to keep you from trying anything that will get you into trouble. You sign up for trail rides based on your vehicle, I have led the extreme/buggy buys in years past, but will be toning it down this year with the kids going. Come out and have some fun and see all the different rigs and meet great people.

Greyhound, my son did it in a 2wd limited (albeit 3rd gen) with stock tires last year. I realize your concern, but the guides are good and you will be more than pleasantly surprises at the capability of your 5th gen. There are trails of all levels and you are sure to have fun. I would probably loose the steps for the weekend though, although if you forget I have an extra set.

We will be there for sure. Gilmer is a great run and relatively local. The fine folks at TRDParts4U are the title sponsors. Good times! If anyone needs lodging coming and going from out of town, I live about 1.5 hours west of the event and have some room.

How old are your kids? I will have my boys there, they are 12 and 8 but don't like to wheel. Probably stay in camp mostly.
I want to go, but my little one is too young. My 5 year old has loved off-roading since she could say 'bumpy bumpy' but my 1 year old still gets scared.

Tone it down a notch, bring the FJ and sip wine coolers...
It does sound bad when you put it like that - but I have had several weekends alone / guy trips recently and I would be a bad husband at this point if I tell the wife she can't come (she really wants to go).

Boys are 14yrs and 18 months, will be at camp to but I will have to do some light trails to help get them some seat time

My oldest is 16 and has his 86 runner that I am teaching him to work on. My 18 month old went last year, no trail rides for him then. But he loves the runner when we hit the beach, so wife got him a nice high back seat to try him out in. After that he gets a kids mastercraft, but like i said no heavy trails while he is with me.
