Looking at 80 series

I may have the opportunity to pick up a beater 80 series to play around with, but upon a close examination I found some frame rust. Its an sc rig that has literally zero rust (still has the black factory coating) just except for the area pictured below the manifolds, I guess what im getting at is does anyone this spot is patch able or is would this be a write off? Thoughts?

You can patch any part of the frame you want... the issue is just a matter of how much work is it going to be to get to that part of the frame? Its an 80 series so it may not be too hard to just pull the whole body off the frame?

I'm not sure i have the resource for that kind of job, though for the right price it could be temping, it has been sitting for about six months and has a dead battery or alternator but is still very temping, my damn 4runner is to reliable, to keep me entertained haha.

been there man, the 4runner is the my first southern owned car, zero rust.

That rust is no big deal. The 80 series frame is thick and strong. What you might be in for a surprise is the fuel costs and abysmal mileage especially with the SC. You're looking at about 10-12 mpg and 93 octane gas.

Does it have lockers?

My buddy loves his FJ80. The only complaint he's got is the fuel economy. That big I-6 drinks fuel like it's being poured in with a funnel. You gotta' have deep pockets to take a trip in one of those or hit the trails all day.

Makes sense.

Gas is still not cheap, but a little better than the Supercharged version. You can run 87 in a stock 80 series with no problems.

On the trails its not too bad on gas... not much worse than anything else idling all day. Getting to the trails is what gets ya. Once you go over 55-60 mph the MPGs start falling fast.

Some people complain that the 1FZ-FE eats head gaskets. I don't think that's the case if the cooling system is maintained, especially with Toyota Red coolant. The PHH (Pesky Heater Hose) is a PIA to change out but is really the only major design flaw. You can't change the PHH on the side of the road when it goes.. It's a maintenance item you just do. About $20 in parts.

I'm going to check on the lockers and at 240k the head gasket may be the least of my worries haha

I almost wish I bought a Land Cruiser instead of the 4Runner. But I liked the smaller size of the 4Runner, less chance the wife will back into something..
