Looking at a 2nd gen 4runner, can anyone decipher some of this? :D

Hey everyone, currently a owner of a 3rd gen sport edition and wanting to get more of dedicated trail rig and have some questions about a 2nd gen, specifically this 1995:

95 toyota 4runner SR5
3.5" lift
New 33x12.5 BFG tires
Bumper Upgrades
40k on Rebuilt 22re with LCE parts

Does the truck need gearing for the 33x12.5s?

How is the 22re engine and if it was rebuilt 40k ago, am I looking at any matinence soon?

Is a 3.5" lift going to wear out certain items quicker? CVs, BJs, etc?

What are some things I should look out for before buying?

Also, if anyone knows how much can I score a new tailgate for generally?

Thanks.

Yeah the truck will most likely need regearing.
what kind of 3.5" lift suspension or body?
is it a 5 speed? because a 22re/auto/33's is going to be a lifeless, gutless, slow turtle.

A "used" tailgate with no rust can range anywhere from $120-$300 depending on the seller, look for local part outs on craigslist.

I just put 33" 12.5 BFG's on my truck. It has a 3" body lift and the 3.0 V6. It ain't no speed demon but it gets me from A-B and I am dying to get it muddy.

*Stock gearing will not have a ton of power, but it will work.
*If the motor was built correctly buy someone who knows what there doing it shouldnt need much. but I always check everything! Fix / change what is needed. Maintenance is the key to longevity......
*all the same things you would look for on any normal rig you would buy
*really depends on the kind of lift (need more info)

if you buy it, get a tail light from pick-a-part (pull the part your self) wrecking yard. you should be able to get one for under $30 for the whole thing. Hell even ebay you can find them for about 70 shiped.

dont buy a new OEM one, they are way to expensive!

If it's a five speed, stock gearing will be usable but shitty - 5th gear will be useless. If it's an auto, run away screaming.

The 22RE is a gutless workhorse of a motor with a reputation for going forever. 40k is nothing, assuming the rebuild was done right. Start thinking of doing the timing chain at around 100k. Other than that, keep it in oil and don't overheat it and your only worry will be getting passed by turtles on the freeway.

A 3.5" lift is probably a bracket lift, so all the suspension and drivetrain should still be in stock config, except the front driveshaft. On the other hand, inspect the brackets carefully for cracks, some of those "lift kits" are not the best quality.

This!
I have a 2nd gen 22re. They are much heavier than the 1st gens. You want all the power you can get. I ran mine (5 speed) for a short while on 35s with stock gearing (4.10) and it sucked to say the least. You'd have to pop it into 2nd to get up steeper hills.
I have since re-geared mine, now I can go up the mountain passes doing 50mph. haha.
If you really want the rig, expect to either re-gear or just put some smaller tires on it. Expect to spend about $1000 or more if you have a shop do your gears.

On another note. Post some pics! :snacker:
