im looking at a 98 2wd 2.7L auto fully loaded. it has 107K mi. it is red with tan interior. its pretty clean just the paint needs to be buffed out. it doesnt leak, smoke or anything. i test drove it and it runs good just a little under powered. i want something like it. i just have never had a toyota. alot of my friends have had toyotas before. i have a friend with an ext cab 4x4 5spd with the 2.7L engine. i wonder if i should pass because it is big with a little engine. i just would like to know if it is a good deal and what should look out for with this truck? o by the way they wanted $7,000 but i got them down to $5,000 i would really appriciate the help!!

The 4 cyl has been talked about here. It is a good engine, lasts a long time and has a timing chain. It will be a bit slow, but worth considering.

hey thanks for the info guys. i know that it is slow but i think its ok. i drove it and yea you have to give it some to speed up but o well. i was just wondering what yall think about the price, what to look for when i go back, what gas mileage should i expect to get, and how long will the engine last? thnks again!!

I will jump on the opposite side here, the 2.7 will have plenty in a 2wd. I switched from a 00 4wd 5 speed 2.7 to a 02 4wd auto and the power difference is minimal. The 3.4 is easier to keep moving, but I was disappointed on a recent trip to VT when I found the 3.4 actually had to downshift to maintain speeds up the bigger hills. The 2.7 could often pull the same hill in 5th w/ the pedal to the floor. Also I find that off the line the 2.7 was just as quick as the 3.4 auto, now everywhere in between the 3.4 feels stronger, but not by that much. I miss the 2.7 and would swap my 3.4 auto for a 2.7 5 speed in a second. I am not saying the 2.7 is stronger, but when you throw in other factors such as auto vs. manual 4.56 gearing vs 4.10, the difference is not too big. And lastly MPG sucks in the 3.4, I average 17-19 where I used to get 20-22, for a motor that is not overly strong it gets about the same mpg as my friends 285 HP Yukon.
The 3.4 has decent power but there are many other engine upgrades for the 2.7 from LC Engineering. Unlike the 3.4 that has a s/c, which will cost a ton all in w/ fuel upgrades, timing, etc. you can buy headers, cams, etc. for the 2.7 to make the sucker move. This is much cheaper so if you don't need 4WD, it's a pretty decent buy for $5k.
