looking at a new (old) 3rd gen

I am thinking about picking up this 3rd gen

1998 4Runner SR5 V6 -- Lifted & Locked

it has all the toys I want (mostly) and appears pretty clean. The add mentions it has an open front diff. Can someone school me as to why you would want it open for off road use?

Any feedback on this vehicle would be greatly appreciated.

Looks nice, but personally I think it's priced pretty high. I know the market is higher in Colorado and the PNW, but maybe you can get it around $7k. He did some aftermarket stuff, but you can't always get all that money back. Here in the Midwest, that truck stock is $4k all day...I don't think it's worth an extra $4600...
 
I have a 2000 and I thought the front diff was locked. I mean when I go around a corner in 4 wheel drive it shutters and jerks like both front tires are trying to turn exactly the same. I figured unlocking it would allow the inside tire or a turn rotate less than the outside but I don't get why anyone would want that for off road.

I agree with the posts about the price, It is a little high.

My 2000 SR5 has only the 2hi-4hi-4lo transfer case. My 98 Tacoma and 96 4runner were the same. The simple, old fashioned 4wd. When turning corners on dry pavement you have the conflict of traction to one front wheel and one back wheel causing the binding.

The push button awd is a viscous coupler (think Subaru, VW Syncro, etc) that provides differential action. Dry pavement is no challenge for this system.
 
I agree with the 7K offer for this rig. Put cash in his face and if he takes it great and if not then keep looking. I'm sure I can find a 5speed 4x4 with a locker for 7k some place in this country.

He's not too far off. I plan on selling my truck for over 7k and I've got 33s and not even a spendy lift with a 5 speed manual. People are asking ~6500 for branded titled 4runners. I picked mine up for 5600, got a killer deal. PO didn't know what he had. I actually didn't know what he had either until I did research. He was just the cheaper ones on there and I was first to call!
 
Do a compression and also a coolant test before buying it.

What kind of a coolant test do you mean? A floating ball type or a pressure test, or something different than either?

Just interested as I'm also looking at buying...
 
If it's as clean as it looks, that is a very reasonable price. I think even the ad speaks to how knowledgeable the owner is and judging by how clean and well maintained it looks, I would think this would be a great buy.
 
Noticed you are close by. (I live in Fort Collins, CO)

My rig is loosely for sale and is along similar lines to what you are looking at in some ways.

I'd be asking not thaaaatttt much more than the one you posted. But its also 5speed, supercharged, and has more goodies.

Ya that's why I mentioned the higher prices out west. We don't have the insane markup here in the Midwest that y'all do.
It is harder to find a rust free truck though, so some people travel out of the area for one.
