looking at a rebuild

so ive come to the conclusion its time to breathe some new life into my 95
sr5. It feels like she is only running at about 50%. all cylinders are firing, but compression is starting to go. and the rear main seal is leaking too.....its time.
Ive never pulled the motor out of a 4runner before, so im hoping you guys who have taken a motor out of a second gen may be able to give me some tips or tricks. From the looks of reading my Haynes manual, it looks pretty straight-forward. Just wanting to know what im getting into before I dive in.

Also, has anybody used one of those ebay rebuild kits for the 3.0? its like 320 bucks for everything you need for a rebuild, gaskets, bearings, pistons, rings, etc.

one more thing, anything i should do to the motor while its out, any kind of performance mods I could do that would be alot easier while its out? Im teetering on a set of doug thorley headers, but dang they are expensive. any lower cost versions out there? thanks for and advice/input.

Just about everyone here will tell you to go ahead and upgrade to the 3.4 engine...simply because it's a better design and more power. This is what I probably do when that time comes as well.

if that was within my budget i would definately go that route. but I just cant swing 2k+ right now. Im figuring I can do a basic rebuild on my 3.0 for under
1k.
