i know this is the classic 4runner section, but I have 2 of them and i trust the opinions here.

Iv been wanting an FJ62 for a long time now, but keep seeing 20k price tags.
I found an 89 on craigslist for 1500 unless they forgot to add a "0" that's pretty low.
Anything in particular i should look at on it?
strait 6
The guy said that the battery dies after about 2 weeks, new alternator and battery.
i know there is some body rust , im a 4runner owner i know rust very well
any help would be appreciated

I understand what you're going through. I recently scored a 1996 FJ80 with a blown head gasket, and seized a/c compressor for $2200.00 firm. My wife and I jumped on this, and are very happy we did. Easy to work on, and now runs like new!

I say - go for it! Great price! Don't wait too long as these are getting harder to come by for a reasonable price.

Before my 4Runner I had an '88 FJ62 for years that I built and wheeled and loved that truck! I assume you know they're underpowered and have auto trannies. The tranny isn't the best and makes it feel slower than it really is. I replaced mine with a 5-speed which, when combined with the 3FE is great.

That sucker has a lot of rust but is cheap enough if you don't mind it. Personally I would pass on the rust and look beyond the rust belt for a rust-free one (Colorado has a bunch)

If it shifts poorly, plan on a new tranny. They're notorious for wiring issues originating in the driver's side rear behind the wheel well. Other than that I still like them. Sold mine with 287k miles on it and would have driven cross country with no concerns. Unfortunately I lives in an emissions test area and it was struggling to pass when I sold it.

Good luck!

Yes I got it. The guy didn't know what he had. 2 hour drive home my 4runner overheated but the FJ drove like a Cadillac. Auto trans went threw the gears so smooth you couldn't feel it but had to listen for it. The heat and AC work perfectly. New tires. I had to put a gallon of antifreeze in it, it hadn't been checked in years and didn't leak. Last oil change over a year ago and hadn't been driven 500 miles on that oil change. Interior is perfect. Door panels like new, seats show little sign of use, it held 70 mph with no problem. It's SFA. Has a throttle pull knob. Auto shifter is floppy but I will fix that with no broblem. Tailgate/ back hatch needs shocks and lube but in perfect shape even the wiper works. I'll post pics Monday

I wouldn't worry too much about the battery going dead in two weeks, that sounds like an easy fix, actually. Its gotta be something running constantly, and I would be willing to bet the previous owner had an amp or something in there that's just pulling the battery down over time.

Could also be the battery terminals are corroded and causing a bit of resistance across the terminals. Even with a new battery, corrosion at the terminals can still create resistance and pull the battery down over time.

Can't wait to see the 62's pics!

Congrats! Can't wait for pictures. I've always like the rounded lines, and shark gills on the FJ62. Does it have an elocker like my FJ80? And - a solid front axle. YES!

:hail:
