Just spent the last few weeks on my 1985 4Runner. Actually finished everything that I wanted to do on the first round.

OME suspension, complete with new shackles, etc.
ARB front bumper
Warn 8000
Kennesaw Mountain custom rear bumper
LC Engineering vented rotors, header and stainless exhaust
DOA Racing complete engine
SR5 instrument cluster swap
Lots and lots of other things....

That's a sexy looking engine. Thanks for passing along the info about DOA. I'm still shopping around for reasonably priced engine manufacturers.
 
I think it took them a few weeks to build it and, yes, I did get instructions. It's not an easy bumper to install. You have to mount the mounting brackets and then clamp the bumper to the brackets and then weld them together.

I didn't have them ship it. We live most of the year in the UK and we always fly into Atlanta and then drive over to Alabama. I picked it up while we were in Atlanta and took it with me. It's obvious from their shop that they don't keep inventory and only build to order. Thus I can imagine that you would have to be patient if they had a lot going on at the same time.

I have to say that I'm pretty impressed with the design and the strength of this bumper. Also, they are about the only ones that I could find that actually make a rear bumper for a Gen1 4Runner (or at least a non-tube rear bumper). I did have to specifically ask for their "old style" as their newest one is a bit different. You can pretty much figure out what you like from their website and they are pretty good with emails and, of course, over the phone.

One last thing, I didn't have them include the side skirts. It's not that much extra but in my opinion the factory skirts look better and the bumper without the skirts fits fine.
 
check my thread out on the not so new custom bumper... I got the same rear bumper but with side skirts, and I got the front wincher bumper. I had a tube rear and did not like it at all.

I will agree its a pain to out that rear one on. especially if you have flowmaster dual exhaust. I can say when you get it on there its on there!!!!! Nice looking 4runner!!!
 
I saw your thread. It is a pain to install and we had to do some trimming with the torch and grinder before we could get it just right to weld. In fact, I'm planning on having mine powdercoated later but I already know that I'll have to drop the back spring shackles to get the bumper off. It won't slide past them. But God help whoever hits it from behind! It's gonna hurt both of us.

You have their newest Gen1 rear bumper design with the taper all the way across the end and the sides. Mine is only tapered on the sides. More or less the same bumper but I wanted the straight profile across the back.

Glad to see that you finally got them both installed. I have to say that my ARB bolted right up with good instructions and all the right hardware for the bumper and the winch installation. It's a pretty heavy bumper too but maybe not quite as heavy as the rear one....or as heavy as your front one!

Good luck with the search. I only seriously considered having a mechanic friend rebuild mine or buying one from LC Engineering or DOA Racing. I can't really say in the end why I went with DOA vs. LC Engineering but so far it's done well. I can tell you that I have over 180 psi per cylinder and the porting, from what my mechanic could tell, was excellent. I did decide to buy vs. rebuild because I thought rebuilding would cost at least $2k and I could buy new for less than $4k. For me the extra cost seemed like the way to go, especially if I could get a bit more HP.

I didn't have to do anything to the motor as mine was running o.k. but I wanted more power. It still isn't like having a V8 under the hood but I guess that was never going to be possible with a 22RE.
 
Dang you dropped some coin in that one! Looks very nice. Drop some gears in the tcase and a locker in somewhere and bring it out West for some real fun! Moab is calling your name.

Would love to come out West again. Unfortunately we're in the UK most of the year for the next few years. I do plan to put a Toyota elocker in the rear and a Detroit trutrac in the front. Otherwise I'm just going to play around with the interior some when I'm home.

If anyone has need to get rid of an 8" rear with elocker and 4.56 gears, here's your buyer.

I've been hunting quite a bit in Colorado over the years....beautiful state! I always thought it would be nice to live in Colorado Springs....like maybe at the Broadmoor! :D
 
I was wondering how a desert sage color would look on my 4runner and now i have my answer and i like it! What fender flares are those? Is that grill stock in black? wonder where i can get one cause i only see them in chrome.

This 4Runner color is Creme (paint code 557 I think). It was available in 1984 and 1985 but I don't think it was offered in any later years. I've often thought about changing the color but haven't.

The fender flares are Bushwacker Extend-a-fender, no cutting required.

That is the stock grill. This is a 1985 Deluxe model, not an SR5, so there's no chrome on it anywhere.
