Looking for a 4Runner

Hey! I'm a new-comer here and I am currently in the market for a 4Runner. I know that Toyota has a reputation for outstanding durability and longevity. From a poll I have seen on here I have seen that third-generation 4Runners are the best for 4-wheeling and so this is what I am looking for. But I have a couple of questions.

I'm used to American-based vehicles (Chevy, Ford, so on) and I noticed that a lot of these vehicle have very lacking interior. Controls are very basic and undermined. So which year do you recommend that suits with a nice interior?

For price, which would you buy? I know that the resale value is going down because of fuel costs which is fine with me. I intend to hold on to this vehicle for a while.

I guess my main usage for this vehicle or a description of what I am going to do with it is this:

It's going be a daily driver with a combination of city and highway driving. I am also going to use it for extreme conditions such as pouring rain and/or snow. It is also going to be used for 4-wheeling for a little fun.

I have some general ideas in mind for it:

• A lift, possibly four inches
• Wheels and tires
• Shrockworks bumper or ARB bumper. I practically fell in love with these replacement bumpers, they look very strong.
• Aftermarket Lights
• HAM & CB radios
• Roof rack with relocated full size spare tire.
• Performance parts such as air intake or such.
• Maybe a snorkle?

This basically lists what the 4runner is going to be used for and some general ideas in mind. If you had this idea, what would you choose in year?

i would go for a 00-02, just cuz i ahve a 96 and it is more basic in options wise, rear lockers and such. but thats what i would get if i had it again and get limited, they just look better

In '99 Toyota did the mid gen upgrades which were plenty but '99-'00 were the last years of the 5 speeds and rear diff lock which is a nice thing to have off road.

With the 3rd gens you really don't want to go over 3" of lift due to the strain on the CVs and with the air intake it's easier/cheaper to just do the deckplate/ISR removal mod and get the same results as a $200 intake setup.
I'll post up a couple of links to the mods in a bit.

I'm very happy with my '99 and it's quite capable on intermediate trails and is a very solid daily driver and even with the rack and bigger tires and my leadfoot I'm getting 16-17 city and 21-22 highway.
