Looking for a Cargo Carrier for rear hitch.

This is what I use. It's a bit pricey (I paid $175 for it last year, but prices seem to be headed ever upward!), but it's been an excellent carrier with a good weight capacity. We just fold it up and leave it on the T4R when we reach our destination.

It is deep enough to lay 21" suitcases front to back (4 side by side or 6 when on edge). What we do more often these days is put a waterproof bag in it, specifically this one:

Since the bag is pretty big when loaded, I stuck a light kit on my platform just in case the tail lights were blocked.

we've had our HF hitch carrier for over 12 years and has held up great.
we just used it last weekend for a quick overer nighter at the beach and will use it again this weekend for a desert trip!

I looked into several different carriers before picking mine, but this is the only one that I've owned so I cannot compare real-world use with any other carriers. The ability to fold up without hitting the rear hatch was a requirement, which significantly narrowed the available options. I also wanted rails to help hold things in rather than just a 2" bottom lip. We've carried firewood to camp, 6 suitcases+cooler+bags on a 1,000 mile road trip, and various other random trips and it's been great.
Since I haven't owned any of the others, I can't really say whether the extra up front cost is justified or not. This one is steel and is a little bulky but manageable when putting on single handed. It has side rails and is 24" instead of the more common shorter lengths, which allows me to sit things down within the rails and better arrange things like 21" suitcases. I like the idea of the lightweight aluminum carriers, but the ones I researched all had half the weight capacity. The build quality has been great for my use, and I expect it to be the only carrier I buy for a very long time.

Yup, the all aluminum one from Harbor Freight works just fine & so far is holding up with no problem.

Resurrecting a semi-old thread here. A couple questions about these carriers:
1. Do you notice any loss in gas mileage? I would guess you might lose a little bit.
2. Do many/any of you carry extra gasoline in cans on these? That would be one main reason for me getting one and I am not even sure if it is legal to do such. Thanks!

IDK about legal but as a rule you want to avoid doing anything with fuel that will cause a fender bender to become a raging fire. I wouldn't carry gas that low outside the vehicle anywhere that I share the road with other vehicles, or ever actually. But then again I don't have any wish to be on fire or witness someone else on fire... :fear:
