Looking for JBL 6-disc changer for 2004 (or info on the topic)

I bought a used 4runner and the original JBL stereo was replaced with an aftermarket CD player that is falling apart. I want to go back to the original JBL cd player, with the steering wheel controls. I've talked to two local dealerships and they both tell me that my 4runner originally had a 6-disc changer in it, based on a VIN lookup.

I've looked around on ebay and the 6-disc changers are near impossible to find. I'd be fine with a single CD player, but the dealership says I will need a different wiring harness for this to work, which will cost $1000+. Has anyone been down this road? I have seen some threads on replacing head units but not much info on the wiring harness issue.

I have a 2004 limited, the parts I am looking for:

16853 (number on faceplate)
86120-35291 (stock number on top of unit)
cd tape radio

I have an 04 Limited. I was under the impression that all Limited's came with the JBL 6 disc head unit. I think all single CD units used an entirely different plug system. If I were you I'd keep looking. I'm using an aftermarket stereo but before then I've had 2 different JBL 6 disc players (an 04 and an 08) I bought and sold both on ebay.

I think the single disc units are NOT JBL which kind of screws it up for you because your system is designed to plug into a factory amp.

I would check on Crutchfield and just look at some units that might interest you. My guess is, as the years go by these factory units might become hard to find. But remember you should be able to use 03 till about 08 JBL units.

My '05 came with a JBL single disk unit, so they do exist. The issue you will have is the trim around the radio is different between the single disk and the 6 disk. The single disk is setback a bit while the 6 disk is pretty much flush with the silver bezel. As long as you go with a JBL unit the wiring should be the same.

I think you have a bigger issue than just finding and replacing the head unit. The JBL system uses a amp that is powered by the head unit (digital power). I dont know about the speakers if there is anything specific to them or not. Then you will need the factory face plate, probably a wrecking yard item.

I am in the process of replacing the head unit with an aftermarket. I was planning on keeping my factory unit ( 6 disk JBL) in case I ever sell the 4runner.
