At 3" there is no doubt he will need new shocks.
1. What will the usage of your vehicle be like? percentage of street and off-road
2. What type of off-roading? Fire-road, mud, rocks, desert
3. What is projected budget you are willing/ able to spend?
You can get a complete OME set for around $700 good for daily driver and mild/moderate off-road
Toytec Ultimate Lift with Coil-Overs about $900-1000 good daily driver and moderate to heavy off-road
Sonoran Steel various kits up to $1500 the SS1.2 decent daily driver with heavy off-road.

I've been wondering for a while now....if you took a stock 4runner with 150K miles on it, and just did a spring/spacer lift, without new shocks, how long would the old stock shocks last.....and how awful would they ride? Just curious.

at 150k they are most likely toast, also if you had a 3" lift coil on a factory shock and let your wheels droop, it is possible to do some serious physical damage to the shock...
t4r4life, try a dealership they can give you the factory part numbers, then call TRDparts4u and they should give you a better price.

This is my only vehicle (Daily driver) and I'm mostly on-road. I don't do any off-roading like a lot of us here on the forum but I would like to get into to moderate off-roading at some point. I do a little on crappy gravel roads, forest service roads etc, a little mud (nothing crazy....yet) and I snow board so I'm in the mountains during the winter.
I've been looking at that Ultimate lift kit from toytec for a while. It looks like that is a pretty good kit. I'm not too excited about dropping a grand but I guess it's better to do it right the first time.
Anyway, the trucks got 157ks on it and it's never had the shocks replaced. I've ALWAYS wanted to lift my toyota (used to have an 88 pick up, didn't lift it either). There have been a lot of posts lately about people adding lifts and/or getting new shocks and they are stoked on the results and ride quality. Bottom line: I would like to be driving a lifted 4runner. Not stock.

Thanks for the offer 4MUDDER, but I'm not really looking for a spacer lift. Your truck is sick by the way (hope you can figure out your lift problems soon too).

hey man, i have the sonoran steel lift on my daily driver. ive had it on there for about 2 years now. i love it. it has great on road handling and has done quite well offroad. the install is pretty easy. i recently installed a rear bumper with a tire rack which squated the rear end a bit but before that it had a nice rake to it.

This was a pic from last nite, coils only, no shocks. Put the shocks on today and the rear is a little higher than this picture now. If you would like pics, I could take some tomorrow.

Feels really good. I need to get it aligned tomorrow. My stock suspension was totaly shot as far as shocks were concerned. My springs were in good shape. Rear springs were done on the recall, so they were like new.
Will be testing it out on Sunday on my way to go shooting.

i am running the 1.2. before putting the current bumpers on all i had were the stock fat lip front bumper and a trailer hitch on the rear. i cant find any pics from when i first lifted it ill have to dig deeper for them, also cant seem to find any direct side on pics.
