Looking for some experience here

Hello I am new to the forum. I am ready to close on a deal for a 1996 SR5 4runner, 3.4L V6, 4x4. The body is in real good shape, interior is clean. The original price was $8,000.00 which is what KBB said full retail was and I talked him down to $6600.00 out the door. There are 165,000 mile on it which does not intimidate me and seems right for the year. I will not be able to get much history on it unfortunately however the vehicle seemed to run pretty well. There are older ones out there but I'll tell you I like the 3.4 L better than the 3.0 right off the bat. Thanks in advance for any input....

First, you do know that the term "out the door" means the price that includes Tax, Title, and Licensing, right? If you pay $6600, and taxes and registration on tp of that, then that's not the OTD price.

As far as the price goes, it's an okay price. Nothing to write home about. SUV prices have fallen quite a bit lately with the gas price scare. Personally, I would pay $5-6k tops. $6k if it had a lot of maintenance records and a rear locker. $5k if it doesn't. That's just me, though.

Also, 3.4L > 3.0L in every which way. Stay away from the 3.0's.
 
Yes, I do know what out the door means. The vehicle price is $5999.00 and Tax+Title is $600.00. I am buying it off a small car lot not a private party and basically am giving top dollar as far as buying it from a private person knowing that he probably paid somewhere in the ballpark of 4 to 4500 for it. Certainly lots of margin there to work with. I have tried to deal with others on lesser 4runners (i.e. there was a 1990 that this guy had advertised for $6000.00 with a 3.0l that I basically offered $4500 for on the phone and he never returned my call after a talk with his boss). The one I am buying has the 3.4l which you confirmed for me is a much better engine. I know from driving it that I like it better what I do not know is any history behind them. I know that I've read that the 3.0 is likely to develop a problem with the head gaskets but I have yet to read anything like that about the 3.4l.

PS is there a way to tell from may the VIN if it has a rear locker? What do you look at on the vehicle. The only other way I would know to tell is to get the rear wheels to spin....

No way to tell from the VIN. Only way to tell is if you looked for the button to the left of the steering wheel that says "RR DIFF LOCK" and check the rear axle.
 
You know modifying my search a little bit I see what you mean as far as the price is concerned. I am looking in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Expanding that out I get a lot more vehicles to pop. I could probably find one with less miles or a little cleaner or whatever. At least if this guy sells it out from under me(he would not take a deposit and it will be a day or two before I can get him the money) I have identified a few others in that price bracket. If I talked this guy down(really with little or no effort) I can probably talk someone else down as well.
 
How are you searching? Cars.com worked really well for me. I had to drive 2 hours go go get it, but it was worth it in my book.
