Loose enough, but I would guess you still have some bushings left.

Probably the majority of members here are too young to remember joysticks for video arcade games as well as for the infamous Atari 2600. When they got loose, control of the game being played could become precarious. For a loose 4Runner shifter I could move mine a good 1/2” in every direction. But I found out I had no bushings left for a 4wd shifter linkage. :naughty:

Well, the search continues for a lab rat for me to do my experiment on. [MENTION=78100]TRD 4RNR[/MENTION] (Michael) came over this morning and his issue wasn't worn shifter bushings. Hell, his auto shifter felt tighter than the ones on both my 3rd Gens. His issue was his shifter not locking into each gear properly. When he would be in drive, his gear selector would sometimes drop all on it's own into 2nd. I figured it had to be a linkage issue so I loosened the nut that attaches the shifter arm to the trans linkage and it moved forward around a 1/2" to it's new happy neutral position. I tightened the nut and we checked his shifter and it was acting correctly again. Originally, we noticed when the shifter was placed in Low "L" and we nudged the shifter forward to "2", it would bypass 2 and go into drive. So, we knew something wasn't right because both my rigs would drop into each gear no problem.

Michael said this issue started after he got an oil change around 10k miles ago. We think maybe the mechanic did something screwy and stressed the linkage somehow, but how they did it while doing an oil change, who knows. Maybe they slammed it into park while the rig was still rolling and the linkage connection was able to shift a bit? Anyway, Michael is happy his issue is fixed.

So, back to finding another willing Lab Rat. Does anyone else in the California Bay Area have a sloppy shifter? When I say sloppy, I mean side to side sloppiness, driver side to passenger side, not front to back. Front to back play is just play in the transmission shifting linkage and not worn out bushings.

I have to ask if you guys could see where the shifter linkage was originally but had been moved? I hope his mechanic wasn’t trying to make a future money maker.

My aunt had her Avalon’s oil changed at the Yota stealership once and afterwards the rotor was grinding on something, which turned out to be the backing plate, which the tech bent. Considering the oil filter was right under the car, there was zero reason to have the tire off. I went back to the dealer with her, got into a heated argument with the general manager, and was ushered off the lot with haste, devoid of a thorough explanation.:second:

Yes, your shifter side to side play is significantly worse than either of my rigs. You can be the chosen Lab Rat if you want. Just clean up that pig sty before you come over. ;-)

I dont mind being the Lab Rat if you are not in a rush for a video. Now that santa clara county just extended the stay at home order, these are my mandatory weeks for Oncall, so the only days I'm free is May 9-11. If you find someone sooner, it's all good.

I guess this would be a good enough reason to clean up all the dirt inside from my hunting trips. My wife has been pushing me to clean it up since forever. Haha

I guess this would be a good enough reason to clean up all the dirt inside from my hunting trips. My wife has been pushing me to clean it up since forever. Haha

I'd honestly like to find somebody sooner than that. If nobody else hits me up for help on this, maybe we can do it in May on your rig.

I couldn't see where the linkage was before because enough miles had passed by since he had the issue, 10k miles. What's interesting is he had mechanics telling him it was his shifter bushings. I knew right away shifter bushings wasn't the culprit. Chock up another one for DIYers and a demerit for the Paid Professionals or Crooks, depending on how you view this. I'm just glad Michael didn't get suckered into paying for this repair.

I clean the inside of my beater with the leaf blower, take all lose items out of the truck and go at it with the 200 mph leaf blower. works pretty well.

edit: also you can duct tape anything down that needs to stay. pre-blow

That sounds like a fun idea. Given, I live in condo area I dont own a leaf blower. Gives me a reason to buy one now.

Well, I decided to do the video on one of [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] rigs and my girlfriend Alison helped me film it. Sean's rig was a great example to do this job on because 2 of the 4 bushings were completely disintegrated. There was just basically some fine grit left.
