Looking for tire and rim advise on an 06 Limited

I recently bought an 06 Limited and once I had it home, I discovered no one makes good off road tires in 18 inch size. Wondering if anyone has experience in solving this without spending a heap of money, new 17 inch rims and A/T type tires?

Welcome. I discovered the same thing when I got my 4runner.

If you want 17 inch rims you will have to go with the revos for the most part or go to a slightly larger size than stock at 265/70/17 for other options.

I do not know about the limiteds but would assume they have the larger brakes like the sport editions. These versions have larger calipers and can not clear the oem 16 inch rims that come on the sr5 with is why the sport edition is only available with 17 inch rims.

If you can live with having two sets of wheels and tires, one set for off road, and one for daily driving then I'd go with a set of 16" wheels for off-road and keep the 18s for daily use. The selection of tires in the 16" size is much better, and you can usually go to a somewhat wider tire without too much clearance problems. Just make sure you don'[t have any clearance problems with your calipers and the 16" wheels.

If you're into the off-road stuff.....find someone who wants to swap their stock 17's for your stock 18's.

If that works, just put some BFG's on the 17's and you're set....

17" have many off-road tire options, so you can stay with 17".
16" will have more off-road tires, but brake callipers might be an issue.
I'd recommend to go with 17" and Revos for mainly on-road and occasionally off-road or BFG A/T KO for more off-road.

If you can hang in there a while longer, I'm sure there are tire manufacturers expanding their offerings in 17" and 18" all the time. More and more vehicles are coming standard with the larger tires and wheels and the tire maufacturers need time to catch up with their street and off-road tires.
The question is, how long will it take.

Near perfect solution: Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor P265/60/18. It just came out in this size...so, don't expect anyone to have it yet. You will need to special order it. It is very good off-road (from what i read), has snowflake symbol (for severe snow), quiet & comfy ride (due to extra Kevlar layer), and has a decent sidewall. Bad things include possible decrease fuel economy (from what i read) and it is P-rated, not LT-rated. Because it is P-rated, i would stay away from this IF you carry heavy stuff or tow heavy things. Other than that i think that you are stuck with upsizing. There are a few tires in 285/60/18 range like Nitto TerraGrappler. BFG AT KO does come in 285/65/18 but this tire MAY cause some rubbing problems on your 4runner.

Cooper STTs

Check out the Cooper STTs - they have been reviewed favorably, and come in 18s. I had the same issue, but I think I'm going to switch to 17s for more sidewall.

Baja Taco is currently running the Coopers by the way. They are very aggressive looking.

Try the Nitto TerraGrapplers which fit the category between Revos and the pricey BFGs nicely so it's nice to have another option.

Just had mine off road over the weekend and they handled a beating on the rocks and show no signs of it after a 13 mile trail ride.

Mike may have a good idea here. This could be an option. I am not sure if these Coopers will rub, but it's worth a try as another option.

Here's what they look like mounted on 18s - on a RangeRover.

The nice thing about the coopers is that the factory states 7.5 inch rims are okay. Not so with others that I have seen.


I'm getting the Coopers in 285/17s in the next week or so - I decided to swap my rims for more sidewall. But if I had kept the 18s this would be the way to go.

Yep

He does, but his rims are wider. I don't think those tires will fit stock width 4runner 18s.
