looking to buy a 4runner, which one?

Hey guys, just joined the forum looking for some advice. Currently looking to buy a 4runner after driving a 2wd tacoma for a couple years. Currently looking at these 2. Any advice on which one to get? The red one has a ton of lift, but he claims to get 310 miles to a tank of gas. The black one claims 15-17. This would be a dd/fun vehicle since I plan on selling the 2wd tacoma and my lifted jeep cherokee.

First one.

if you don't want a full off road truck don't buy the red one driving a sas truck every day to work gets old trust me i did it also the red one has the 3.0 (not toyota's best motor) not very reliable now the 99 looks like a good truck if you want to dd it thats what you want it will get good mpgs i get 19 ish in the summer 21 on the highway i do my mpg ever tank the 99 has a 3.4 the motor is know to go 300k+ granted my 3.0 had 250k on it but it was far from great running the 99 will need some work wouldn't be a bad idea to to a timing belt normally do it every 100k so keep that in mind when you negotiate there bolth good trucks i would offer 4 to 5 k on the 99 just my 2 cents
 
Skip the red one. Too old, lame 3.0 and who knows how reliable those mods are. Plus, there no way he is getting that kind of mileage unless he drives 55mph on downhill roads.
 
Does anyone know how to tell what engine the black one has? Since it's an sr5 does that mean it has the v6?
 
Negative on the 3.blow, head gasket will eventually let you down. I bought a 92 SR5 before the one I currently have. It had the 3.no and at 180k miles somehow it managed to fail and water got into two cylinders. Clunk. Only two weeks into owning it at that, a $2500 lesson that pointed me to the 3.4L. If you do get a 2nd gen, go with a 4cyl.
 
And the 99, 33x12.50s on stock height? Wouldn't that have clearance issues? And it states HID headlights, but no projectors so... eh. Still a good looking truck, though

The 2nd gen definitely looks painted underneath, look at the exhaust compared to the rest. And I'm pretty sure I see mud dried on some hoses in the pic of the front end. That's a LOT of modification to trust was done correctly, sketches me out.
 
Go with the 99 for sure if its not an offroad only vehicle. The 99 has the 3.4L v6 that is super reliable. Its also a Sport edition that a lot of people look for and is probably the most rare 3rd gen.
 
Hey guys, going to look at the 99 tonight. Asked him about the timing belt and apparently it was replaced last year. Also waiting on a text with the vin to run. He is asking 6500obo, what do you think would be a fair price for this truck, considering the mileage(only thing that scares me abit)

Also according to kbb, the thing is only worth $3700(although I havent seen anything other then shit for less then 5) Should I use the kbb value in the negotiating process, or not?

Yes you should use the KBB when negotiating. In fact you are already at a disadvantage because you specifically want a 3rd gen 4Runner and that will make you more willing to pay extra for it.

The fact is that a car with a KBB private party value of $3500 would probably go for $2700 or less at an auction.
 
$3100, 3800, 4900 are what Edmunds says for a 99 (whlse, private party, retail-that's w/out any options-so you should price it out). Only real common major issue applies to auto trans w/4wd, "strawberry milkshake"-if you get one of these just take care of it if it hasn't been already-many posts on this topic.

That price seems high, but not out of the ordinary for a 3rd gen. People always ask alot for these because they are great trucks. There are deals to be had if you search CL and jump on them as soon as they come up. I just got an 01 Sport 4x4 with 185k on it with all big maintenance stuff done in the last 5k miles for $4500. A girl had it and im sure her dad bought it for her and she didnt want it anymore.

Now I have to keep telling myself its my wifes car as I scour the lift threads!!!
