Looking to buy a 96 SR5....5800 too much?

Hi all. Found exactly what I would like to buy on Craigslist in the SF bay area. Its a 96 with 190,000 miles on it all power and 5 speed manual with the newer 150 HP 4 Cylinder motor. Tires are BF Goodrich All Terrains with 70% tread.

High blue is around 4 grand in EXCELLENT condition. This one has new paint and a 3" body lift. But its not excellent. I'd say going by KBB rating it is in good condition which means its around 3700.

So is 5800 to much to be asking? i dont want to pay too much for such a high mileage vehicle. Seller says he might lop off a few hundred. Are the high miles any worry? no major engine or tranny work ever done.

That does seem a little high considering the miles. BUT don't le them deter you. If it's clean and maintained well, that shouldn't be an issue. Looks like it's missing the piece under the drivers headlight. I would offer him 5k or somewhere around that area and see what he says. The price will really depend on your area. What are other 4runners going for down there?

That seems high to me. High mileage, not a limited, cloth seats, exterior is missing a piece or two, and it has the smaller engine.

Might be worth it to do a carfax check and see if it had a collision that was the reason for the paint job.

The price does not seem ridiculous to me- especially if you can talk the seller down a bit. The 5 speed, 4 cyl motor combo is rare as hens teeth, if that is what you are looking for. And 4runners just go for a bit more here on the left coast.

The 4 cyl engine seems to be a bit more reliable and longer lasting than the 6, but both are great motors.

FWIW, I paid $8700 about 3 months ago for a 2000 4runner with the same motor and transmission. It was in nice shape and had 91k miles, many options for a "base" model- i.e. pwr windows, locks, mirrors, moonroof, tinted glass, rear heat, tow package, roof rack.

Some people think this was a bit high, but it was worth it to me- almost exactly what I was looking for, and in my local area. I also sold my 1988 4runner for $3300, about $1100 over Blue Book.

Just paid $5300.00 for a 96 4runner with a 5 speed and v6. 110k on the odo. Unless he changed gears a 4banger and 33's aren't going to be fun the first time you go to Tahoe. FWIW the 5VZ motor is a way better motor than the 4banger. Just took a short 300 mile road trip and got 22mpg on a combination mountain and freeway driving. FWIW I live in the bay area.

Except for the fact that it isn't as reliable and needs expensive timing belt replacements every 90k miles.

But I would agree that 33s with the 3RZ motor, even with 4:56 gears, is not a great combo...

Plus with that 3" body lift everything is maxed out if not already replaced like gas filler, brake lines moved, steering shaft, etc. And the radiator must be moved in front of the fan. IMO the 3" body lift is a waste unless you already have maxed out the suspension lift capabilities and are really a professional willing to take your time and install a 3" body kit. I know the 96 was made with weird parts that didn't take to body lifts as well. Check out 4Krawler AKA Roger Brown for some info on the lifts.
