Smyrna, East Cobb, Lower Roswell, or maybe Dunwoody might be a good choice. I've been in Alpharetta 9 years and I can tell you finding a home in your range would be difficult here. It's possible, but it would be a townhome, garden home, or a much older house in need of updating. It's affluent out here and the home values reflect that. I do love it here and the schools are some of the best in the country, it's getting cool(er) than it was a few years ago and I've seen some younger faces start to show up here and there. Rif raf factor is almost non-existent. Traffic can be a real pain during peak commuting times.
You could find a nice place in your budget in Cumming or Kennesaw, but your commute would be awful (easily and hour+). As a native Atlantan, I can tell you traffic is a huge problem no matter where you live. It's a huge problem in metro Atlanta period - this is a commuter town. The roads headed south are choked in the mornings and gridlocked headed north into the burbs (Alpharetta, Cumming, etc.) in the afternoons.
If you decide to consider somewhere that isn't north of the city, check out Decatur; small town feel with a hip vibe, lots of festivals and still has a walkable nightlife scene.
