Hey guys, well as the title says I'm looking at vehicles and considering a 4runner. I had (now the stbx's ride) a 2000 4runner that has been nothing short of fantastic. It's got a little over 200k and has never had any problems. My current car is a subaru-powered VW Westfalia camper van that's awesome, but it's not a great daily driver. I've been looking at cheap practical/dependable rides to relieve the Westy of it's daily driver duties, but given the high resale didn't think I could afford a newer 4runner.
In the Seattle area they all seem to go for way more than a comparable car from another manufacturer. I decided I'd look nationally and see what I could find and have found 1/2 dozen or so 4runners I'm interested in that fit my budget but many are from areas I'd consider 'rust country'. When people talk about buying old VW vanagons the general consensus is to try to avoid 'east coast vans' and buy from the west coast. Does this same rule apply to newer 4runners? I can't really see why it wouldn't, and really don't want to buy something that's starting to rust.
What I'm shooting for is a Gen 4 4runner, around 150k miles (or less), for under $8000. If I bought from someplace far away I'd pay a mechanic to inspect the truck and have it shipped home. What do you guys think? Am I asking too much to try to squeeze in a 4runner under 8k? What do you think about buying a 10 year old truck from, say, Ohio or Connecticut?
