Looking to purchase this '85

Hey guys i have been a member for about a year now and have come from the 5th gen part of the site. I have a 2013 trail edition w 3'' OME lift on 33's etc.
anyways

I have an opportunity to buy a 85 runner that is already built. Here are the specs:
6'' suspension lift i believe with bilstein shocks
marlin transfer case
529 gears
arb air lockers
arb front bumper with warn winch
rear bumper( i know several companies make these)
rebuilt 22re with about 35k and truck has about 290k
comes with soft and hard top.
its in what i consider great shape , little to no rust in the body with minimal surface rust on the frame( has been garage kept for last 15 years)
i'm sure i'm forgetting a few things
the only thing it needs is new tires

The guy is asking $8k and is really having to think hard about selling it.

I think 8k is reasonable or am i overpaying?

Ive been looking for about a year and its hard to find a SFS runner , 5 speed, 22re in this good of shape in the southeast. I normally don't buy vehicles already modified but most everything thats done i would be doing myself anyways.
just looking for some opinions

Before I even scrolled down and saw this, while I was still checking out the photos, I had $6k in my mind and was going to suggest trying to get him down around there. But like nevada said, if it's worth it to you, then go for it.
 
thanks guys yea I'm thinking its a kinda steep especially when i gotta put tires on immediately. But at the same time its turn key ready to go, anyways maybe he'll come down some

With a brand new set of tires it still wouldn't be worth more than $6,500, TO ME. It is an awesome rig though and has all the right parts!
 
First, with all that will it pass any inspections needed to tag it?
Around here it wouldn't.
And like everyone else has said, 6k would be more reasonable.
 
These questions are always hard to answer. It's way more expensive to build one than to buy one, but building one offers some more benefits. I think its a little steep also, you need to decide what it's worth to you. Id overpay for the "right" one of I found what I really wanted.

Ok, so let's build this truck.

5" Trailgear springs are $329 for the front and $406 for the rear. That's not counting shackles, bushings, ubolt flips, or the fab work to fit them up, so let's call that $1000. Dunno what shocks he's got exactly, but 14" 5125 Billies are $90 each from Trailgear, so call that $350. "Marlin transfer case"... more details are needed. Is it a 4.7 case? Is it a doubler setup? Let's aim for the middle and say it's a single 4.7 Marlin case, that's $900 not counting shipping. 5.29 diffs - no details here, so let's cheap out and say you're gonna buy two sets of USA gears and mini install packages on Ebay for $350, and your buddy down the road is going to set them up for $150 a diff. That's $800. But wait! ARB lockers you say? Tack on about $1200 for the lockers and another $200 for the compressor and wiring and such. Your buddy is awesome and won't charge you any extra to set them up because he's already doing gears, so thats $2200 for the diffs. An ARB front is $750 new, a cheap Warn winch is $500, any random tube rear bumper can be had for $300 plus or minus. So let's say $1500 in armor and winch. A Softtopper is $700 these days, I think. You say the tires are shot, so I'm not counting those at all. Figure on at least $1000 for a good set of tires, and potentially much more.

That's $6650 in mods, conservatively, not counting the labor to install most of them. Every 22RE in the world was rebuilt about 30k ago so that means nothing, and if the truck is "mostly" clean, it's probably worth about $2500 sans mods, but I'm shooting in the dark there. So you could maybe build that truck from scratch, buying everything new, for around $9000. If that was the exact truck you wanted, all the mods you want (he's missing a lot of mods that I would consider necessary for a truck of that caliber) and none you don't (a six inch lift? ridiculous.) and everything done the way you would do it (ARB lockers front and rear with stock axle shafts?), $8000 is an ok deal from that perspective. But then you've got to step back and see that similarly equipped trucks are going for more like $6000, and you consider that if you wait for deals and invest some of your own blood sweat and tears you could build a better truck for more like $5000, and it doesn't seem like such a good deal any more huh?

So no, you wouldn't be getting hosed if you paid $8000 for that truck. But you can do much better for the same money.
 
Alot is also what these trucks go for in your area. In CA and NW, fully built rigs are a dime a dozen. In other parts, they are more rare and can go for more or less depending on demand. But all in all, I don't think $8k is unreasonable but would have to get more details.

It seems like a reasonably clean truck. Unless the interior is trashed, a decently clean '85 will be around $4k by itself, no mods. Is it locked front and back? What's the Marlin Transfer case? Double? 4.7? I would agree that $6 to $7k is a better deal, but if you know you want all that stuff in it anyways, I think it would be better just to pay the $8k.

Not a great deal, but not terribly over-priced either.

Good break down. As stated, if the interior is in good shape and everything works, I would look real hard at this as a lot of expensive work is done, especially if you have a shop do it. I would take a wad of cash and see what you could do but wouldn't squabble over a couple hundred.

so heres what i got:
85 4runner w/ hard top and canback softie
engine is all stock
Arb front bumper w/warn winch
rear trail gear bumper
arb air compressor with rear locked only
marlin crawler 4.7 single case with bud built crossmember
it has custom alcan springs front and rear
front has ford style shock mounts with bilsteins

Can't wait to go to GSMTR @ Windrock this year and do Coppinger Cove

Nice ride, if you lived in Va. or were visiting, i'd tell u to bring those seats to me and let me fix them....

yea the drivers seat is pretty bad, gonna get a quote for both soon. The drivers seat is the worst of the interior and no cracks in the dash.
 
Great news on the dash, even the wrecked parts runner i bought had a cracked dash. The seat pics LOOK like the back seat bkrest is brown/dark tan and the bottom is either a dark green or an odd charcoal, vinyl in the back, tan cloth in the front....and i'm more asking than stating.....sometimes an upholsterer will go over the original back seat and just make a rugged vinyl back seat cover to preserve the original back seats and put something tough on to transit pets and kids and such. When u get a quote ( i'm guessing you're gonna get a quote for both front seats, as that cloth's probably original and not available any more ) post what the quote is and what they're gonna do/use...just curious what others prices are as that's what i do for a living.....if you get both buckets done for less than $500 as long as they tend to any driver's foam wear ( normal on every vehicle ) and show you a nice durable piece of fabric they're gonna use, you won't be over paying. $400 for both would be a great price, fyi.
 
Thanks for reminding me. I'm still pissed about that. I got sliders and put in a locker and... Fk! Brb, I gotta go yell at my 'ol lady! :frusty:
