Loose Shifter Handle?

On my 2003, the shifter handle seems to be getting lose, in forward and backward motion. The top screw-on part is properly and tightly mounted, but the whole assembly moves forward and back, as if a base down below the paneling is torqued open a bit. I DID have the truck in the shop about a week ago and they claimed this was normal, but I wasn't so sure. The whole assembly moves left and right normally like it always did.

Do a search, I recall reading a few threads about a detent spring or something along those lines that can go bad or get broken. Most report that it flops back and forth between D and 3 or whatever is to the left of drive in your shift gate.
