Loosening oil drain cap, not assembly

Anyone have any tips to help me figure out how to loosen the oil filter cap drain where you insert the plastic drain before removing the housing? Mine makes an awful mess changing the oil and I'm at a loss to how to get it off without breaking the plastic housing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Best to do this on the vehicle where you've got some leverage. A smack on the end of a breaker bar with the heel of the hand is usually enough to shock it free...but might be a good idea to get a backup first so you're not screwed if you crack it.

it is tough to feel how much force to use because of the plastic housing and many have cracked it. Get the metal housing so it doesn't break that easily. part #15620-31060 and the motivx oil wrench kit comes with a hose and wrench MX2320.

Mine has been OK to remove if I follow the torque setting for the plug and cap. If you overtighten the plug, then you get to do it the hard way, taking the whole mess down, then remove the plug. You could try holding the body with a strap wrench if there is room.

Torque is 18 and 9 ft/lbs

I've noticed that the whole cover spins when I try to use a ratchet so I pop on a low torque impact driver to break it loose. Yes I am only using a ratchet when tightening the bolt after draining.

This is the answer. I changed mine several times with the plastic housing until I finally gave up. I put the metal housing on it and the last time I changed my oil, it worked fine taking off the cap, draining the oil from the filter, then taking off the housing.

And yes, I used a torque wrench to put them both on when I had the plastic housing. It just sucks.

You’ve got some good advice here. Get the metal oil filter housing, swap the internal perforated tube, get a Motivx filter wrench and their screw-in drain tool.
If you have a bigass channel lock pliers you can hold the housing (while still installed on the truck) while removing the filter drain plug. The metal housing does not come with the drain plug, re-use your original one. Use the proper torque for plug and housing.

Thanks guys. I ordered a metal assembly off Amazon today and a spare drain cap. I'll experiment with trying to break it loose and see how it goes next week when I get the replacement parts. That way if I screw it up I've got a backup.

I got my parts from Amazon today and swapped out the filter element tube on the metal replacement. Everything worked just fine. Thank you again for all your help.
