Lost Compression in Cylinder #6

After failing my local emissions test with a score of 1145 hydrocarbon I took my beloved '90 runner with 239k miles to my mechanic. He replaced the spark plugs and discovered that my #6 cylinder is only getting about 55lb of compression. He suggests a valve job that could run $2k. He doesn't think there will be any problems putting this job off, just loss of power and possibly burning out my CatConverter. Any suggestions?

I don't know much about these trucks but $2k sounds high for a valve job.

2nd Opinion

I took my '95 in because of water coming from the talepipe. It turned out to be 6th cylinder, as the mechanic predicted. He said it was fairly common for Toyotas. The job cost me $1,200, in NorthernCalifornia. I would call around for a better deal.

I am going to leave it alone for know and save up $ for the repair.

I would definetly get a second or third opinion. $2,000 dollars would about buy you an engine. A "valve job" should be far less.

I think he meant a head gasket job right? if your loosing compression in the #6 cyl this is the sign of your head gasket going up very comman for the 2nd gen.

there was a recall on this.
were they already done under the recall?

BTW don't let this go or you warp the heads/crack the block/blow the engine....

I don't know if the recall work has been done. I got the vehicle at 155k and it is now at 240k I have not had any recall work done on the cylinder. Do you know how I would find out if this would still be covered?

Call the dealer with your VIN number and they can look it up and tell you.
