Lost Key???

Ok so I lost a pair of my 4runner keys this weekend. I have an 05 with the toyota security system. The keys I lost were the black toyota one and the little remote that opens the doors and can roll down the window. I have a replacement that came with the vehicle but I have been told that you can not replace your keys if you lose this one too. So I called the dealer and they said its 50 bucks for the key and 50 bucks to program it to the car because each one is different. They also said it is 150 for the remote. So I am looking at 250 bucks for a pair of lost keys. Am I missing something here? That seems rediculous to me. If anyone has any tips that would be great. Thanks

All 4th-gens are equipped with an engine immobilizer that requires the key to have a computer chip send a signal to the car before it starts. The keys retail for around $40-50, so it'll probably be a good idea to get it from the dealer. You won't find them that much cheaper elsewhere. The bad news is that they are the only ones who can program it to work.

The good part: Find a remote on eBay. Make sure you get the right one, Toyota changed the remote in 04 or 05. They usually go for about $10-40. You can program the remote yourself. There are instructions somewhere on this board.

Here's a remote that might work:

So don't bother with the dealer for the remote, they're easily programmed. They key however is something only your dealer can program. I hope that helps you out.

That actually cheap for a smart key with alarm function. BMW has the same setup on their keys and it cost about a thousand dollars.

Other that the suggestions above, thats the story. I had to special order an extra master key from my dealer when I got my '03 (they didn't stock them at that time). Key cost me $56, and another 30 to program it. Also note that unless Toyota changed the system with the '05, you can only have a max of 4 keys programed to the system at any one time. If you lose one of the 4, you have to have it deprogramed before you can add another.

And to program the system, you have to use a master key that's already programmed into the system.

Do you guys know if the lighter grey colored key is programmed to the vehicle? (with my 4runner I recieved 2 black keys and a light grey key) If not what is its purpose if they wont work not being programmed? Thanks
