Lost my key!!! Help please

Hello!

Okay, im in the U.S military and im stationed in Italy. I have a 2003 4Runner and i lost one of my keys and the remote for it. Can i get and uncut key on the net/ebay and will it work. Do i have to get it programed or is it possible to program it my self...please help thanks

A key off of the net will work. You can get it cut anywhere. It MUST be programmed by a dealer or shop with the correct equipment. In the US now we're starting to see Ace Hardware and other locksmiths than can do programmed keys.

For a non-Toyota source to program it you must have one working key. If you have more than one (which I assume you don't) I think you need to take them all so it doesn't "de-program" the other keys. I am not sure if that applies to Toyota, it does apply to some vehicles.

The rempte can be had via Ebay. Many come with DIY programming instructions.

thanks! I do have 2 other keys. One is the wifes and the other key is the valet key. We only have one remote now and her key and the valet. zthe valet key has a little metal tag on it with a code on it. Not sure what it is
for but my guess it's for the code. So if i geet the one key i can use my other key to help program it? Thanks Z!

Most likely you can.

The transponder unit recognizes "master" keys and "sub" keys. According to TSB S003-02, you can have up to 5 master keys and 3 sub keys registered. However, you must use a master key to perform new registrations.

Assuming your wife's key is a master (probably is) then you can register new keys. If it's not, though, then you'll need to replace the transponder unit.
 
The immobilizer key is indeed costly - to buy and have programmed. Loos the master and you'll need a loan! You can have a regular key cut but it will just open doors and not start vehicle - unless you hid an immobilizer key up under the dash. Get a remote off ebay that matches the FCC IF. My 03 uses HYQ12BAN. If you can't find programming instructions for it I can provide. You will have to reprogram all remotes at same time - keeps finder of lost fob getting access too - so reprogram even if you don't get an new fob.

as others have said, the remote is easy to program - here is a link to a post with good instructions. As an example for you: I bought a remote for $32 on eBay, followed these instructions, worked great.

I lost one of my keys & transmitter one time. I went on Ebay to get the transponder for $30. And had The Dealer order, cut & program my key AND remote. I had them reset the codes on both remotes, because if my lost key/trasmitter was found, my keyless entry will not beep and they cannot get into my truck. HOWEVER...if they turn the key manual, then they can get in.

Go on ebay & find yourself a trasmitter. Be sure the seller has an excellent feedback & be sure the FCC ID on the back of the transmitter matches yours.

Question: I have read that you may have a maximum of five keys made before the car must be "reprogramed". Does anyone know how you can tell how many keys have been made and about how much it cost to have the car reprogramed?

See post #4 -- it's 5 master keys maximum. As far as I'm aware, the only way to tell how many keys are programmed is by connecting to the Toyota handheld computer.
 
valet key

hello! i bought a used 2003 4runner and came with no valet key! how do i get a valet key? are they cut different or just programmed different? thx
 
Home Depot

Recently went over to Home Depot and had a chip key made as a spare, because we lost my 2nd set of keys. Cost me about $70 with tax.

Don't you know just the other day, my wife puts on her snow pants, and she finds my spare set of keys with the remote, and Toyota key. Now I have 3 keys!

The Home Depot key works great on all the locks, and starts the 4R. Not a bad price if you don't feel like opening and closing your door 15 times while moonwalking, doing pushups, and clicking the seatbelt 7 times(disclaimer, I don't think the previous statement is true when it comes to programming your chip key yourself.)
