Loud clunking sound when vehicle goes from D to R or R to D

Attempted to record it again this morning, and now with the wheel turned to the left, the sound isn't there.

It was 75F and humid this morning.

I'm wondering if when I am recording, I am taking longer to stop...say I'm stopping, and then shifting into D. During this time, I'm somehow giving it enough time to avoid it happening.

Either way, I'm going to attempt to record it once more tomorrow, after that, I'm going to just "leave it be" until the service appt.

Heck I'd rather just have the problem remedy itself

Another way to check this might be to hold the brakes tightly and shift from D->R->D and have someone record each axle shaft and drive shaft. I wonder if you have some play in one of the half shafts, or a drive shaft?

I am at dealership. I test drove a 100 miles done 4runner LTE and heard the exact similar sounds. Techician said there are 2 things happening (1) Gears are getting engaged and since we are going from R to D or vice versa, there is some sort of mechanical rotation, which is clunking sound and also causes vehicle to squat/lunge/jerk (2) the other sound is coming from brakes.

According to them it is common as it was also happening in another new vehicle. I am still having them inspect and figure out what exactly is happening.

He ruled out low transmission fluid and u-joints.

Get a second opinion my 2013 SR5 does not make these noises and as far as I know we have the same drive train.

The only time I've ever had it happen was when I parked with my front tires pushed a little too firmly against a parking block at work. Not sure if it was slack in the driveline, but just felt like some binding from me being smashed up against that block with my tires.

Do either of you park in a lot with blocks? Maybe parking on an incline/decline?

mine does the same thing under the same conditions ....backup a couple of inches after hitting the block and then engage park.
did the same thing in my land cruiser , even the Range Rover I think.
Erick.

I was wondering it has something to do with 4WD because I have only heard it in from LTE owners.
I wanted to test drive two new 4Runners today to make sure mine doesn't have any issues, but they had only 1 LTE in lot. I am feeling better that it's something common after driving a another new one. May be my sample size is too small. I will try it again during my 5K service.

It's very possible. Every coupling in the final driveline will have some play in it and will wrap one way or the other on load. This would include your center, front, and back differentials, your driveshaft U-joints and slip joints, your front and rear axle/half shafts, and anything internal to the transfer case (chain, 4WD shift collar, etc) and transmission (only mentionable play likely coming from the planetary gearset). The question is, what is a normal amount of play in each component. It surely varies between vehicle as all machining tolerances do. Personally, I would rather have one that is a little bit on the loose side in this case - That should mean less final drive friction for certain components.... No play/tightness generally means increased friction and wear.

check the u joints. I had similar issue in one of my older 4runners - then had ujoint explode on me while driving.

I discussed about U-joints with the tech. And, he was sure that's not the case here. He said the sound due to U-joints is different from what I am getting.

DId you ever figure anything out here? I realized that when I cycle between forward and reverse on my 2005, I do get some clanging. It's most noticeable when I'm parked next to a concrete or brick wall and my door or window is open. Just based on the sound alone I would guess that it is normal.

my 85k mile 2011 TE has done it for as long as I can remember no issue just the clunk and sound. You are shifting int to gear. It's going to make noise

I seem to have the same clunk. Park to D, drive 3-5 feet and “clunk.” I assume the consensus is still it’s a 4Runner characteristic.

Lube, or have them lube your prop shafts. I had a clunk and that cured it. If that's not the fix I'd go back to the dealership if still under warranty, that's not normal.

Was your clunk at the front of the vehicle? When coming to a stop, it seems like I get an occasional clunk as well. Maybe I am just becoming paranoid. Still under warranty so a dealer trip will be in the future. Thanks for your input.

My clunk was mostly coming from a stop up to about 5 mph. Or if I was just inching ahead at a stoplight. I forget how many prop shafts the mechanic had to lube but I thought it was six with a four-wheel-drive. I paid to have it done and got roasted on here for it. Lots of tutorials on the subject if you want to take it on yourself.

Nothing wrong with paying to get it done. I want the dealer to check it to have at minimum a documented paper trail and hopefully a simple fix. I'm well within my warranty period and have done zero modifications. Unfortunately from past experiences I know clunks can be one of a multitude of possibilities. I'm hoping your solution is the fix. Thanks for your input.
