Loud grinding from front end, HELP

Did some light wheeling this weekend and this morning discovered a noise coming from the front end (driver, I believe) of my 94 t4r. The noise sounds like if you were to take a large bolt and run the threads over the corner of a table. It's very loud and vibrates the car, however it does not effect speed or steering. It comes and goes at completely random times and is ver loud at slow speeds (15-25 mph)

I have not cracked into it yet to inspect cv's or hubs, just wanting some input and to see if anyone has had a similar problem, any help would be appreciated

Jack up the front end and spin the tires and see if you can hear anything. Also shake the wheel left to right and up and down and see if their is any play. That would be first thing I would check.

Check the diff too.

This ^^

If nothing looks obviously wrong, put the truck on four jackstands (or drop the rear shaft and put the front on stands) and crawl under and have a listen. It does sound like you could have stripped something between the CV and the hub or the halfshaft and the diff. One of those is much more expensive to repair than the other :D.

I MAY have found the problem (knock on wood)

Tore in to the hub and discovered that the flange that goes behind the c clamp on the cv is completely missing and there's a lot of play. It's probably somewhere in our campsite in bmra when we had to field change that cv

Nothing I've checked on the cv suggests that it's the problem, I'll fix the flange and see if it goes away and then update.
