Loud window noise

When I lower my driver's side window, when it gets just past half-way down, it makes a very loud, very alarming "SNAP" sound. It only happens when the window is going down, not up, and it only happens with the driver's side window. Until I figure out what's going on I try not to lower it below half.

I figure if it's happening to mine, it may have also happened to someone else. It's getting pretty cold up here, so I probably won't take the door apart until next spring, but I was curious to know if it's a common thing like most problems, or if it's more of a one-off thing.

I didnt get a chance to get into the window, my new fox racing coilovers showed up and i couldnt resist putting them in! :d next week i will be pulling the window apart, replacing my steering shaft, and checking alignment..

Same issue here. Driver side going down. Alarming snap sound. Not every time. I plan on digging into it eventually. Like when my window breaks in Mid January.

All of you open your doors all the way and then roll the window down, does the problem go away?

If so, the door catch (the black thing between the two door hinges that holds the door open for you) needs to be replaced. They get old and start impeding into the path of the window glass; the "SNAP" is from the window forcing itself past the stop.

The technical term for the "door catch" is the "DOOR CHECK". And, yes, if the door gets thrown open, really hard, it can cause the DOOR CHECK to get damaged/warped/bent and cause an alarming "snap" or "pop" noise when rolling the window down. To remedy this (in the case that this is what your issue is), you will have to (with the window rolled UP), remove the door panel, remove the protective plastic liner, and carefully remove the door check. You may have to remove your speaker, to allow your arm to go into the bowels of the door to get to the mounting bolt for said door check. An oem replacement is about $77.00 at OEMPARTS123.com.

Just got done doing this fix on my 03 4runner v8, it's very easy to do, no special tools required to remove the door panel. I watched this video on YouTube first, very helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFhs9b_SBz8

Yes, but it's easy to do, entire swap should take less than 45 minutes.

Looks like the sound came back, even after replacing the door check. I'm going to take it back apart and see what the heck is catching now..

The window is still hitting the new door check, a few weeks back I tried to bang the inside of the door jam with a large screw driver to get the check bent forward so it doesn't hit the window when it rolls down. Anyone know the best of bending the door check forward? thanks

Fixed mine today. Just pulled out the Door Check strap and re-bent it away from the glass. Works great now with no interference. Also tightened up the outside glass weatherstrip while I had it apart. No more window rattle when rolled partially down now. Lubed up the window gears and contact points too. Window zips up and down real smooth and quick after that.
