So if I trade for a Tacoma 4dr off-road with a 6 speed manual am I setting myself up for disappointment? I don't need a full size truck but it would be nice to have the bed. I live in a very strict HOA and can't have any trailers unless they are kept in the garage and as it sits the garage is full of cars and "toys" I'm getting ready to put a lift in the garage but that is for the future sports car.
Love my 16 T4R trail but I really need a truck....

Sounds like you need to test drive a Tacoma, and probably take a Tundra out for a spin while you're at it. Maybe the newer offerings from Chevy / GMC if so inclined.

I've driven and ridden in my brother's '16 Taco many times. It's not as comfortable as the 4Runner and no power seats is a major bummer. The dashboard with the larger LCD screen is cool though, wish my T4R had it.
Really you should just go test drive one. Only you can decide if the differences will bother you enough or not.

I've had both in the last year. 2017 DC Off Road Tacoma and 2017 SR5 4Runner. I don't think you're setting yourself up for disappointment if you switch to the Tacoma. Ultimately, you're frustrated with your 4Runner because it doesn't have a bed and a utility trailer won't work for you currently. To me, the Tacoma feels more cramped from all seats. I know the dimensions are very similar, but it just feels more crowded. The seating position in the Tacoma didn't bother me, but I do like the 4Runner seats better. If you are going to use the back seat for adult passengers, the Tacoma may frustrate you/them. It's cramped compared to the 4Runner. As has been stated many times before, it just comes down to whether you're moving people or stuff more often. There is no substitute for a truck bed when you need one. I move people more so I swapped my truck for the 4Runner. The auto transmission in the Tacoma is not awesome. I understood it was designed that way to get better gas mileage, so I willingly accepted the strange shifting. You said you're looking at a manual, so you will probably be happy as you'll have more control. I think the Tacoma and the 4Runner are both unique rigs. They both have a huge following of passionate owners. Many are repeat owners. There is a lot to appreciate in both of them. Good luck.

Chevy Colorado and GMC offering have the same driver space issues as the Tacomas. If you are any decent size the Chevy's will feel cramped.

Tacoma is a dumpster fire of sadness.
The engine sucks.
The AT sucks.
The MT is okay.
The interior sucks.
The seating position is more carlike (nothing like the 4Runner), if you're tall, you will fit weird in there.
There's no room in the back in the access cab, double cab has more room, but has no bed space unless you get the battleship length full size bed, but you can't get that with the MT.
Leaf ****ing springs.
Drum ****ing brakes.
Some are made in Mexico.
They probably figured out how to put them together (tighten the diff bolts), fixed the stalling issues, and reprogrammed the various computers so it doesn't hunt gears all the time... maybe.
All this, plus like half a dozen trim levels but they still wind up costing $35,000-45,000. What's not to like?

The Tundra is great because it comes with a slot for humongous CD's and a cheese grater for giant blocks of cheese right on the front of the car. It's prepared for any scenario involving giants.
I’ve had 4 Tacoma’s before my 4R. Everything has already been mentioned about the downgrades like interior room etc. My plan was always been to rent a uhaul trailer like BobsTrail said if I needed one. Plus when you have truck, everybody wants to use it to haul their stuff and next thing ya know somebody tears your stuff up.

That's why stay away from the 3rd gen. The 2nd gens are solid. I'm very happy with my 4.0 in my 2009 4runner. Tacoma will have the same engine.
I go wheeling with 5th gens sometimes I get better MPG than a 5th gen 4runner too. Hoping the Tacoma is the same.

I’ve written a lot about this, but not recently. I had a 2016 Tacoma Off Road with the manual, after having owned a 2013 4Runner. I’m back in a 4Runner. To me the 4Runner feels more like a truck than the Tacoma, the seating position really kills it for me.
Without going into all the details, take several test drives, extended if possible. Note the differences, regardless of how small, and decide for yourself.
If I were getting a pickup now I’d probably be looking at Fords.

I cringe every time I pass a 3rd gen on the road after owning one for a year. Don’t regret it one bit trading it for the 4runner. It was too small in every way for such a long truck. Never enough room inside or in the bed. Engine/trans combo sucks.
If I had to have a truck again I would go full size. So much more for your money. More comfortable, quieter, more powerful, etc.
Have you looked into the folding trailers they sell at Norther Tool? They fold up like a ping pong table and you can wheel them in your garage.

If you find the headroom too limited in the new Tacoma, try driving a model without the sunroof. I rubbed the roof on sunroof models but fit just fine without.
