Love the Runner but is it ever Noisy!

My parents had a 02 JGC (v6) and i can def. say my 4r is quieter. In fact my friends parents have had Lexus brand cars for a long time. I remember riding in them and being amazed how quiet they are. I would say the 4r is very close, ive even turned down the radio while on the highway so i can listen to how quiet it is.

When I bought my '05, the exact same truck at another dealer, sounded louder. I'd get yours checked out.
As for the "upgraded" sound system; save the mirrors and go aftermarket.

With the V6 4Runner, I notice the engine noise big time on startup.

I had a Highlander before and it started like a Lexus (oh, so quiet).

I like the 4Runner's engine a bit loud, it's a tough truck. It shouldn't be too quiet.

i think the engine note (I have V6) is pretty good.

For some reason, a lot of trucks sound like huge fans to me. Instead of a burbly, normal engine sound, all I hear is whooshing air. I don't find the 4Runner is like that though, except right at startup before the idle settles down.

I let a guy at work take my 4R on a sales call , and he came back and said man that thing is so quiet and solid.......He drives a Chevy Trail Blazer 04 4x4.

My 4Runner is so quiet I find myself hearing really stupid things like a little piece something rubbing a piece of interior. There is no way I would have heard these things if it wasn't so quiet!

You're right, the V6 is loud at startup only.

That's the first thing I noticed about the 4.0 V6 in my Tacoma before the 4R. It's a lot louder than the 3.3 V6 in my Camry. Then again the Highlander uses the 1MZ or 3MZ, depending on year that's also used in Lexuses. The 4R is much quieter inside than the Tacoma though. The louder engine makes it feel a bit more truck-like.

Chrysler/jeep engines are soo loud that they flat out drone over everything in the cabin of a grand cherokee....something is worng.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the V8 engine and its pretty darn quiet. Of course its not as quiet as my 2006 Lexus GX470, but for what it is, its pretty quiet.

Seems like quite a difference of opinion here. My 2006 Sport is pretty quiet around town but I do notice some noise at highway speeds and I'm always fiddling with the radio (non-JBL) trying to hear it over the road noise. I've never heard any pinging from the running boards, however. I think maybe those with the better radio don't notice the road noise as much. Also every Sport I've seen has the Dunlop tires and I wonder if others might be quieter.

My 02 V8 Grand Cherokee ran so quiet that I accidentally cranked the starter while it was already running on more than one occasion.

I've got 40,000 miles on my 2003 V8 4WD Limited. I'd say that it is pretty noisy on the highway. The sound is not the engine, but wind and road noise. It is my understanding that for 2006 Toyota added some insulation and used thicker glass to reduce noise.

One article that I've read says that the new Ford Exploder is quieter in the third row than the 4Runner is in the front seat...

The 4Runner is just not that quiet a truck, IMHO.

Got rid of my 2004 Explorer for my 2006 Sport. Explorer might have been a bit quieter and the stereo was better but that's all it had going for it. There must have been 30 TSB's isssued on it and mine had every problem they mentioned. Sat in a 2006 Explorer this past weekend. They moved the shift lever from the column to the console. Only problem is it looks like a beer tap. Check one out. It's a hoot.

Yep........I'd have to agree with the folks here who think the Runner is noisy at hwy speeds. I find it very noisy whenever you have traffic around you on the interstate. Sometimes when I pass a tractor trailer, it sounds as if the truck is in my back seat or cargo area.
This is definitely a wind noisy truck at hwy speeds.

Wow. I guess that it is all relative. If you take a spin in my stock and original 1989 full-sized Bronco you'll think that a 4Runner is a Mercedes limo. Compared to my 1976 Ford F-250 4x4 my Bronco is a limo
