Low budget, what to do first, new 3rd gen. owner from Tennessee

I just picked up a 2000 SR5 4x4 with 169K for $6750. Only cosmetic issue is a dent in the lift gate above left turn signal. New valve cover gaskets on both sides, new belts (except timing belt which was changed at 100K), new bushings, fresh oil change and tranny flush. Interior is almost like new. Thought I made out ok. Just don't know what to do first on a minimal budget. Everything is stock.

All routine maintenance that can't be verified from 100K to present.

Beyond that, the first thing I would consider would be an auxiliary trans cooler.

I'm in graduate school and plan to use the 4r as a daily for a couple of years and then as a toy after that. Minimal budget will be determined by amount of outlay vs. overall gain and what I can get the wife to agree too since she's the one working full time and we have two kids at home. I would like for my son to be able to drive it when he gets older and he is 7 years old now.

Well the stuff mentioned above would be a good starting point... After that its all in what you want. Maybe a new muffler for sound, upgrade the audio, throw a small lift on... Sometimes its hard to suggest upgrades based on personal opinion. The first thing I did with my rig was lift it because the entire suspension was shot and it made sense to do it then...

Is the transmission cooler something I can do in the driveway? Do you have suggestions for parts and any idea about what the cost might be?

Yes it's a simple job... You install the cooler inline after the radiator... I purchased mine from oreillys it's a Hayden cooler... Nothing special, but it does the job and it comes with the zip ties to attach it in front of your condenser... I spent roughly $40 on the cooler itself. B&M coolers are nice, but are a tad more costly. Add a little more fluid to the system and you're done. You'll be able to find write ups on the install if you search the forum
