Low dip stick or "Where's my oil going?"

No signs of oil loss. No wet spots in the driveway or engine bay. No smelly exhaust. Yet the dip stick is coming up low. Do these engines (v8) console some oil when put through lots of 70mph+ highway time? 130k on the clock. 2007v8. I'm due for an oil change at about 5k miles since last oil change. (4-5k anyway). At my last oil change (I have Valvoline do it) they mentioned that they had to add more than they expected to get me up to the mark.

Thoughts? Is there a common issue I'm not aware of? I do have the v8 secondary fan bypass installed from [MENTION=8828]slyfox75[/MENTION].

I put 7 quarts in mine...

6.5 quarts puts me slightly above the middle of the two dots on the dipstick. 5k intervals and never have to add back.

V8's don't generally leak, but the dipstick isn't not easy to read. it can be miss leading. Make sure its flat surface. owners manual says to read at operating temp, and wait a few for oil to return to the oil pan. It looks like the dipstick enters the pan at an angle, when this happens you have to read the lowest mark of both sides, that has a solid mark of oil. not partial.

Yeah so make sure engine has been sitting for a couple hours before I check mine. If you do it hot it will always appear low.

Have you looked at a spark plug? That might be hard tho unless you look at all 8.....as just 1 cylinder might be culprit.

Thanks all. Good advice. I'll double check using those tips. I'm due for new oil anyway and will tomorrow. [MENTION=8828]slyfox75[/MENTION] I know it's not youths bypass man.

yeah, yeah.......either way, just be consistent. My point is, if he checks his oil in morning before going to work and its "full" and he gets to work, pops the hood and checks his oil it will appear as "OMG I lost/used oil". If he checks his oil before leaving work to go home it will compare to level seen that morning(both cool engines, oil has drained back to pan).

If your V8 is consuming oil, you have a serious problem. These are bombproof engines and DO NOT consume oil at any mileage provided proper maintenance is taken care of.
