Low Profile Yakima Mount

A while back I saw someone had pics of a way to mount their rack under the load bars. Can't find that thread for the life of me.

Has anyone mounted cargo baskets lower, like directly on the smaller supports that are flush to the roof and if so how has it worked out.

I'm hoping to cut down on wind noise, profile, and fuel usage.

I just did this with my Yakima w/ extension. Before when I opened my sunroof I would get a lot of wind in the truck. The wind is much less of an issue now lowered. Looks better IMO also. Time will tell if it holds but its only ~$7 in hardware and I still have the Yakima mounts.

I was actually considering removing the big crossbars completely and securing it to the 3 supports that are flush to the roof. I will attach it to each "eye" giving 6 attachment points total. If that doesn't seem quite secure enough, I could get another support somewhere to use.

Let us know how it turns out. I was thinking about going the same route but instead did what that guy did on the 2 gen.

Did it yesterday. Big hook bolts with stainless wing nuts run right through the top bar of the cargo basket. I was a little concerned about the structural integrity of the rack, but the load is carried by the floor of it and the top only prevents shifting anyway.

Simple. Cheap. Easy. And I will only put the rack on when I need it anyway. Looking for some aluminum to make a smooth floor.
